Friday March 2, 2001Gator Baseball Defeats Central Michigan 11-8
Florida combined timely hitting and quality starting pitching to defeat Central Michigan 11-8 Friday night at McKethan Stadium. Florida improves to 7-7 while Central Michigan drops to 1-3 overall.
The Gators were led by leadoff hitter Kevin Estrada who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and three runs scored. Estrada keyed Florida with a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the 7th. The homer put the Gators up 11-7.
Gator starter Joey Simon (3-2) picked up his team leading third win, going five innings while striking out four. Three Gator pitchers combined to pitch the last four innings holding the Chippewas to three runs while striking out six. Kenny Birch went 2.0 innings, striking out two batters and allowing only two hits and Keith Ramsey finished it off, going 1.2 innings and striking out four.
Florida was outhit by Central Michigan 13-9 despite the Gators scoring three more runs. Florida used timely hitting from Matt Siegel and Matt Goss. Siegel had a two run double in the 2nd to put the Gators up 4-0. Goss had a two run single in the 5th inning to put the Gators ahead 7-2.
Florida returns to action against Central Michigan Saturday at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. All games can be heard on the Gator Radio Network.
