Friday August 9, 20132013-14 Gators Schedule Prepares Teams for Championship Season

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host a season opening invitational, face a competitive Southeastern Conference slate and take on traditional out-of-conference powers during the 2013-14 season, as released by Head Coach Gregg Troy on Friday.

“We try to have something every semester that is men only and women only so that each team can develop its identity,” Troy said. “Since we swim a combined conference schedule, we do a lot of things together also. We like to swim against people that challenge us all year long. That really gets you ready for the conference and NCAA meets.”

Both the men’s and women’s teams finished sixth at the NCAA Championships last season and have enjoyed international success this summer. The men return 12 of their 13 All-Americans from last year’s team that captured the program’s 34th SEC title. In long course competition this summer, redshirt-senior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa) was named High Point of the US Open for sweeping all four events he competed in and junior Dan Wallace (North Berwick) earned a seventh place finish at the World Championships in the 400-meter individual medley.

The women bring back 10 of their 11 All-Americans, including two-time Olympic medalist junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.). Beisel placed third at the World Championships in the 400 IM and was joined by teammates senior Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) and sophomore Sinead Russell (Burlington, Ontario, Canada). In addition to the World Championships, a plethora of Gators swam for national championships, at regional qualifiers and at the US Open Championships.

The Gators open the season on Sept. 27 with the three-day All Florida Invitational. This will be the fourth annual All Florida Invitational, in which teams from around Florida will come to Gainesville to compete in a state-wide tournament at the O’Connell Center.

“The first meet is always good because it gives you an end of the season flavor real early,” Troy said. “You get to see a lot of people swimming a lot of different events.”

The men’s team will dual against Big 10 power Minnesota on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. The women will join the men in Columbia, Mo., to open the SEC season against Missouri at 2 p.m. The women will then go from Missouri to Berkley, Calif., to take on Pac 12 contenders the University of California.

After three meets on the road, the men and women will host Georgia on Nov. 1 in the O’Connell center at noon. The Lady Bulldogs are the reigning women’s national champions. The SEC home meets will continue as Alabama brings both of its teams to Gainesville on Nov. 7. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. Following five challenging duals, the Gators will head to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the three-day Ohio State Buckeye Invitational.

“The whole schedule has a good combination of top-10 teams,” Troy said. “You have one of the best in the Big 10 and the National Champion in Georgia. All of the SEC schools are very tough. The women have a chance to go out to the West Coast and swim against California, which is one of the best teams in the nation year in and year out. We put in some nice invitationals and travel. With the SEC meets it will be a tremendous challenge but also very exciting.”

In the new year, Florida State will come to the O’Connell center at 1 p.m. Indiana River State College will come the next day and also swim at 1 p.m. The men’s team will travel to its second invitational of the season with a trip to Dallas for the two-day SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas.

Three dual meets lead up to the SEC Championships, two of which will be at home. Florida Atlantic will come to Gainesville on Saturday, Jan. 18, and then Florida will host Auburn Jan. 26. At 11 a.m. The regular season will conclude with a showdown in against SEC foe Tennessee on Feb. 1, in Knoxville.

“The SEC is the best conference, and you know you are going to a get a great shot in every chance that you swim them,” Troy said. “Having a couple conference duals in each semester is always good. Traditionally, we finish up with Tennessee. We also go against Auburn, traditionally one of the top teams in our conference.”

The Southeastern Conference Championships will take place from Feb. 18-22 in Athens, Ga. After that Florida will travel to the Bulldog Last Chance Meet where swimmers can compete to qualify for the NCAA Championship if they did not pick up qualifying cuts during the season.

The Orange and Blue divers will compete in the NCAA Diving Zone Championships taking place in Greensboro, N.C., March 10-12. The Women’s NCAA Championships will be held March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn. The Men’s NCAA Championships will be held March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
