Michelle Tumolo, a 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy Finalist, has been named assistant lacrosse coach at the University of Florida, head coach Amanda O’Leary announced Thursday.

“When I thought about my dream job coming right out of graduation to become a college lacrosse coach, I could never have imagined the opportunity to work for one of the most successful athletic programs in the country,” Tumolo said. “In addition to this, being able to coach alongside Mandee O'Leary and Erica LaGrow is such a great honor. I am so grateful for the opportunity Coach O'Leary and Coach LaGrow have given me. I love the game of lacrosse in every aspect imaginable and cannot wait to start a new chapter of my lacrosse career.”

Tumolo (TWO-ma-lo) is a recent graduate of Syracuse University, where she finished her career as one of the greatest athletes in program history. In addition to being a Tewaaraton finalist in 2012, she also was named the IWLCA Attacker of the Year, an IWLCA First Team All-American and the Big East Attack Player of the Year. Tumolo also an All-Big East First Team selection in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“We’re excited to add Michelle to our staff,” said O’Leary. “To have somebody with her passion and knowledge will be a tremendous asset for our program.”

While at Syracuse, Tumolo was a member of teams that won the Big East Championship in 2012 and 2013, advanced to the NCAA Championship game in 2012 and made it to the NCAA Final Four in 2010 and 2013.

Additionally, she was elected as a team captain for her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Despite being sidelined with an ACL injury during her senior year, Tumolo finished her career at Syracuse ranked third in all-time scoring with 278 points, second in career assists with 137 and fifth in all-time goals with 141.

“Throughout my playing time for one of the most prestigious lacrosse players and coaches of all time, Gary Gait, I learned so much about the sport,” Tumolo continued. “I am so excited to get down to Gainesville, settle into some new orange and blue gear, and start my career as a Division I lacrosse coach.”

Tumolo has been honing her coaching skills since 2010, when she coached the South Jersey Devils Girls Lacrosse Club. She also served as a coach at the Syracuse University Elite Lacrosse Camps from 2010-2013. Tumolo is a current member of the U.S. Women’s National Team and has been on the roster since 2010.

“To have a player who has led her team to multiple Final Fours now on our staff will be beneficial as we continue to represent the University of Florida at the highest level,” added O’Leary.

“En route to achieving the ultimate goal of capturing a national championship, I am so eager to share my knowledge and love for the game of lacrosse at the University of Florida,” Tumolo finished.
