Wednesday August 7, 2013Florida Volleyball Receives 2012-13 AVCA Team Academic Award
The University of Florida volleyball team added another accolade to their growing pile, earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 season. In all, 622 teams across the high school and collegiate volleyball landscape received the honor, setting a new record for the number of teams recognized.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Florida is coming off its 20th Southeastern Conference title and 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Gators are the winningest program in the NCAA since 13-time SEC Coach of the Year Mary Wise’s arrival in 1991 and have received six AVCA Team Academic Awards in that time (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2011-12, 2012-13).
“We take great pride in our team’s academic success,” Wise said. “The same work ethic that allowed this team to win an SEC Championship earned them academic recognition from the AVCA. The academics and athletics at Florida are strong on their own, but together they provide the best foundation from which our student-athletes can become well-rounded individuals and stellar members of our community.”
130 NCAA Division I women’s volleyball programs were honored with the award, marking the highest since the award program’s inception in the 1992-93 season. Out of the 32 conference champions in women’s NCAA Division I, 13 were named to the award list this year, including the Gators. Along with Florida, three teams (Stanford, Iowa State and Louisville) who finished the season in the top 20 of the AVCA poll were honored by the organization for their work in the classroom.
The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 300% increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 622.
The Gators start the season with their annual Campus USA Credit Union Invitational. Florida hosts New Orleans, LIU-Brooklyn and Duke in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, Friday-Saturday, Aug. 30-31.
