Monday July 29, 2013Lochte, Dwyer Punch Ticket to 200 Free Finals at Day Two of World Championships

Gainesville, Fla.

Former Gator greats Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer qualified for the finals of the 200-meter freestyle during the second day of competition at the World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Over the course of the eight day meet, four current and four former Gator swimmers representing five different countries are contesting for international titles.

Locthe and Dwyer entered the semi-final heats with room for improvement after tying for ninth place with swims of 1:47.90. With the top-eight earning a shot in tomorrow nightís finals, the 2012 Olympic 4X200 free relay gold medalist teammates used their experience to punch out notable swims.

Lochte dropped an impressive swim of 1:46.06 to enter the finals as the second seed. The eleven-time Olympic medalist was nearly .10 seconds off of his US Nationals swim, and will bid for his 13th career World Championship gold tomorrow.

Dwyer, enjoying his best season to date after swimming career lows in the 200 free and 200 individual medley at US Nationals, ended his semi-final run in sixth place with a mark of 1:47.05. The duo will be the lone Gator competitors in the third day of competition.

Freshman Sinead Russell (Burlington, Ontario, Canada), a 2012 Canadian Olympian, finished ninth overall in the 100 backstroke with a semi-final swim of 1:00.37. Russell entered the semi-final round with the eighth fastest prelim swim of 1:00.17. She still has the 50 back and 200 back, an event in which she finished eighth at the London Games, left on her slate.

Junior Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland), a 2012 Icelander Olympian, narrowly missed lowering her national record during the prelims of the 100 breaststroke and placed 30th overall with a mark of 1:09.75. Luthersdottir will next compete in the 200 breast.

Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. (Central European Time) or 4 a.m. (ET). Semi-finals and finals will start at 6 p.m. (CET) or 12 p.m. (ET).

Universal Sports Network and NBC are currently airing 70 hours of premier pool action during the course of the week.
