Thursday July 25, 2013Gator Student-Athletes Max Lang & Kelsey Horton Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Two Florida 2013 graduates in men’s pole vaulter Max Lang (Tallahassee, Fla.) and softball outfielder Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.) were among 29 men and 29 women selected for the NCAA’s 2013 spring sports postgraduate scholarship, announced this week. Lang, Horton and each of the 58 spring honorees will receive a $7,500 postgrad scholarship. In all, the NCAA distributed 174 individual postgraduate scholarships through the 2012-13 academic year between the fall, winter and spring student-athletes.

To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution’s faculty athletics representative.

Lang turned in a 3.92 undergraduate GPA during his tenure with the Orange and Blue earning his degree in statistics in May 2013, while Horton, a 2012 Capital One Academic All-American, chalked up a 3.76 in the classroom, graduating with a degree in nutritional sciences in May. Both Gators have committed to continuing their education, Lang at Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine and Horton at Auburn University’s Harrison School of Pharmacy this fall.

Lang and Horton both received recognition from the Southeastern Conference earlier in the spring during their final semesters at Florida, Lang as UF’s SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award male nominee ($7,500 postgraduate scholarship), and Horton as UF’s SEC Brad Davis Community Service Award nominee, which resulted in a $5,000 postgrad scholarship for the Gator right fielder.

Horton, a two-time All-SEC and NFCA All-Southeast Region selection, was a top-10 finalist for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award and was named to the 2013 SEC Softball Community Service Team for the second-straight year. The 2012-13 UF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President, Horton helped lead the Gator softball squad to three Women’s College World Series appearances and the 2013 SEC Championship during her time at UF. She finished her career as a Gator with a staggering 211-45 (.824) four-year overall record and an 80-24 (.769) mark in SEC play. Horton ranks fifth in Florida’s career record book for homers (36), and was second in the SEC with her 12 sac bunts last season.

Lang, a 2011-13 SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient, was named to the President’s Honor Roll and designated as a member of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. In 2011, Lang received the Florida Letterman Award for the male scholar-athlete of the year, given to the athlete who maintains the highest GPA during the previous calendar year of study. He was named an Anderson Scholar in 2010, given for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average through his initial four semesters of study. Lang is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has earned letters in all four years of competition for the five-time NCAA Champion Florida track and field team.

Created in 1964, the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association’s most accomplished student-athletes.
