The Gator soccer team is picked to win the SEC East by the league coaches

The University of Florida is the Southeastern Conference coaches’ preseason selection to claim the 2013 Eastern Division title, the SEC office released Tuesday afternoon.

Defending league champion Florida is picked to take second overall. Texas A&M, second in the final 2012 league standings, tops the 2013 preseason standings with eight first-place votes. Florida claims the other six first-place votes. During the 2012 season, Florida turned in a record of 19-5-1, won the SEC regular-season with an 11-2 record and also picked up the league’s tournament title.

In the preseason voting for the SEC East title, Florida leads with 11 first-place votes and 89 points. Kentucky and Tennessee share second with 71 points each. Tennessee also received three first place votes. Missouri holds the fourth spot at 56, followed by South Carolina (42), Georgia (30) and Vanderbilt (26).

In the West, Texas A&M is first with 91 total points and 13 first place votes. LSU is second at 67 points and also received a first-place vote. Auburn is picked to finish third in the West with its 62 points, followed by Alabama (59), Mississippi (52), Arkansas (33) and Mississippi State (21).

Points were compiled on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

Florida returns six starters from the 2012 team that reached the NCAA Third Round. The Gators return two who have earned All-SEC honors during their careers – senior Taylor Travis (2010 All-SEC second team) and sophomore Christen Westphal (2012 All-SEC second team). Junior Havana Solaun, who is part of the U.S. Under-23 National Team player pool, was second among the 2012 Gators with 22 points off of seven goals and eight assists. Fellow junior Annie Speese was fourth in 2012 with 16 points after turning in six goals and four assists.

Soccer is the first Florida team competing this season, as the Gators open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 23 when Florida Gulf Coast comes to the James G. Pressly Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. Admission is free for all Gator home regular-season action. Florida will play an exhibition match at UCF on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
