Monday July 22, 2013Gator Swimming Sending Eight to the US Open Championships

Gainesville, Fla.

Eight Gator swimmers picked up US Open Championships qualifying times at the Southern Zone South Sectional Regional or during earlier qualifying sessions. The US Open Championship will begin July 30 in Irvine, Calif., consists of American and international athletes competing for club teams and is contended in an Olympic sized pool.

Redshirt-junior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa), sophomore Billy Silva (Gainesville, Fla.), sophomore Matt Curby (Oviedo, Fla.) freshman Arthur Frayler (Fort Washington, Pa.), junior Brad DeBorde (Longwood, Fla.), freshman Ryan Rosenbaum (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), freshman Lindsey McKnight (Coral Springs, Fla.) and sophomore Jordan Smith (Longwood, Fla.) all qualified for the US Open.

On the final day of competition at Sectionals, Rousseau finished second in the 200-meter backstroke with a swim of 2:03.02. deBorde touched fourth in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 51.10.

Over the course of the four day meet, deBorde (50 free), Frayler (800 free), Rosenbaum (400 free) and McKnight (200 free) all picked up victories. Using the meet as a tune up for the US Open, some Gator swimmers elected not to swim in the final sessions after logging impressive prelim times.

Rousseau, a two-time South African Olympian and 10-time All-American, enters the US Open with qualifying marks in the 200 freestyle (1:48.69), 100 butterfly (54.17), 200 individual medley (1:59.55), 200 back (2:02.77) and 100 back (57.34). Frayler, a 2013 All-SEC Freshman honoree, enters the meet with US Open cut times in three events, the 1500 free (15:04.69), 800 free (8:02.01) and 400 free (3:53.69).

Curby, a four-time All-American, boasts US Open seed times in the 200 free (1:53.86), 100 fly (55.74), 100 back (56.83) and 200 IM (2:04.10). DeBorde, a fourteen-time All-American, has his eye on the US Open sprint titles after qualifying for the meet in the 100 free (49.94) and 50 free (22.76). Silva will compete in the 400 IM (4:25.67), 400 free (3:59.02) and 1500 free (15:46.70).

Smith notched a clutch 400 IM swim of 4:54.68 at Sectionals to earn a swim at the US Open. McKnight, an All-American and 2013 SEC All-Freshman team member, enters the US Open with cuts in the 200 free (2:02.58) and 200 IM (2:17.53).
