Sunday July 21, 2013Gator Swimmers Win Multiple Events at Southern Zone South Sectional Championship Day Three

Gator swimmers junior Brad deBorde (Longwood, Fla.) and freshman Ryan Rosenbaum (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) each picked up a victory in the third day of competition at the four-day Southern Zone South Sectional Championship in Orlando, Fla.  Seven Gators have already punched their ticket to the US Open Championship during the three days of competition at Sectionals or through earlier qualifying times.

 

The US Open Championship will begin July 30, in Irvine, Calif., consists of American and international athletes competing for club teams and is contended in an Olympic sized pool.

 

Redshirt-junior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa), sophomore Billy Silva (Gainesville, Fla.), sophomore Matt Curby (Oviedo, Fla.), junior Levar Goossen (Rotterdam, Netherlands), freshman Arthur Frayler (Fort Washington, Pa.) Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Jordan Smith (Longwood, Fla.) are all swimming at the event in addition to deBorde and Rosenbaum.

                                                          

deBorde captured the 50-meter freestyle with a mark of 22.94 after notching a prelim mark of 23.25. The junior had already secured a place at the US Open based on his seed time of 22.76.

 

Rosenbaum out-touched Frayler by .15 seconds in the 400 free to give the Gators a 1-2 finish in the event. Rosenbaum came into the wall with a time of 4:01.81, which gave him a 2.07 second drop from his seed time. He also placed fifth in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:08.91. Frayler threw down a swim of 4:01.96 in his second place performance.

 

In the consolation final of the 400 free, Silva posted the fastest mark in the event with a time of 3:59.77 en route to a ‘B’ final victory. Silva’s seed time of 3:59.02 had already qualified him for the US Open.

 

Rousseau coasted in a fourth place swim in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.49. The South African Olympian had already qualified for the US Open with a seed time of 57.34.

In addition to the swimmers at the US Open, five current and four former Gators are preparing in Barcelona for the World Championships, beginning July 28. Also, three Gator divers are competing at the USA Diving National Preliminary Zone B Championships.
