Saturday July 20, 2013Gator Swimmers Enjoying Success in US Open Tune Up

Gainesville, Fla.

Seven Gatos have already punched their ticket to the US Open Championship through two days of the four-day Southern Zone South Sectional Championship in Orlando, Fla., or through earlier qualifying times. The US Open Championship will begin July 30, and consists of American and international athletes competing for club teams and is contended in an Olympic sized pool.

Redshirt-junior Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa), sophomore Billy Silva (Gainesville, Fla.), sophomore Matt Curby (Oviedo, Fla.), junior Levar Goossen (Rotterdam, Netherlands), freshman Arthur Frayler (Fort Washington, Pa.), junior Brad DeBorde (Longwood, Fla.), freshman Ryan Rosenbaum (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore Jordan Smith (Longwood, Fla.) are all swimming at the event.

Rousseau, a South African Olympian in 2008 and 2012, has qualified for the US Open in five events, the 200-meter freestyle (1:48.69), 100 butterfly (54.17), 200 individual medley (1:59.55), 200 backstroke (2:02.77) and 100 back (57.34). Through the first two days Sectionals, he finished with the fastest 200 free qualifying mark of 1:51.57, but elected not to swim in the evening final after already securing a US Open cut. In the 100 fly, the South African nearly swam his season low in a second place performance with a mark of 54.32.

Frayler, already owning US Open cuts in the 400 free (3:53.69), 800 free (8:02.01) and 1500 free (15:04.69), captured the 800 free crown on the first night of competition with a time of 8:16.80. The freshman also earned final swims in the 400 IM and the 200 free.

Curby, a four-time All-American, notched US Open cuts in the 100 fly (55.74), 100 back (56.83) and 200 IM (2:04.10) before Sectionals.  DeBorde, a fourteen-time All-American, has his eye on the sprint titles after qualifying for the meet with the fastest 100 free (49.94) and second fastest 50 free (22.76). Both his marks are US Open cuts.

Silva, having already qualified for the US Open in the 400 IM (4:25.67) and 400 free (3:59.02), touched the wall in second in the 400 IM with a mark of 4:26.80, which represented a six and a half second drop from his prelim swim. Rosenbaum punched his ticket to the US Open in earlier qualifying in the 400 IM (4:28.46) and dropped a second and a half off of his season low in the 400 free (4:02.35) at Sectionals.

Smith, the lone female swimmer of the Gator contingent, took third in the 400 IM (4:54.68) and has now qualified for the US Open.
