Thursday July 18, 2013Gator Men's Golf Reveals 2013-14 Tournament Schedule
Head coach Buddy Alexander and the University of Florida men’s golf squad announced the Gators’ 2013-14 fall, spring and postseason tournament schedules Thursday.
Alexander’s Gators will tee off the fall season at the Olympia Fields Invitational in Chicago, Ill., marking the fifth straight year Florida has participated in the event. Last year, the Gators finished second at Olympia Fields after shooting an 867 collectively as a team, ending the rounds at 27 over.
To wrap up the month of September, Florida will travel to Birmingham for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate for a two-day event on Sept. 30- Oct. 1. From there, it’s back to the north for the Gators who will participate in the IU Fall Invitational at the Crooked Stick course in Indianapolis on Oct. 14- 15.
Florida’s final tournament of the fall season will be a return to the Kiawah Invitational at the Ocean Course from Oct. 27-29 in Kiawah Island, S.C. Having won the team title two years in row now, the Gators will be looking for a three-peat in South Carolina. Last year, Florida shot an 882 for the victory and had four golfers finish in the top-five (Tyler McCumber – t2, T.J. Vogel – t2, A.J. Crouch – t4, Santiago Gavino – t4.)
“My philosophy on the schedule is to play the best courses we can find,” Alexander said. “The courses we play all have different challenges, and some are world-class. The first five on this year’s schedule is a pretty good indication of that, having all hosted a Major of some sort. We are excited about it and looking forward to the season. I hope we’re up to the challenge.”
To kick off the spring season, Florida will head east and play at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Stadium, home of The Player’s Championship in Ponte Vedra on Feb. 3- 4. Home to one of the PGA Tour’s most coveted titles, TPC Stadium will be one of the many highlights of the season.
Florida will then travel home to Gainesville to host their only home tournament of the season, the Gator Invitational from Feb. 15- 16. Florida is looking to reclaim their home turf after falling short of the team title in 2011 and 2012.
The month of March holds a lot of action for the Gators who will compete in three tournaments. From Mar. 2- 4, Florida will venture not too far south for the USF Invitational at Lake South Country Club in Tampa. Then it’s off to Georgia where the Gators will take part, for the third year in a row, in the Chris Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club Mar. 14-16. Wrapping up the month, Florida heads back to sunny south Florida on Mar. 24- 25 for the Floridian Invitational at the recently-renovated Floridian Golf Course in Palm City.
Florida will close the spring season in their final regular-season tournament at Older Waverly Country Club in West Point, Miss.
The Gators will then begin post-season play by traveling to St. Simons Island, Ga., on April 25- 27 for the 2013-14 SEC Championship. The team will look to capture its 16th conference title at the Seaside Golf Club.
If selected by the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee, the Gators will participate in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships. The tournament begins with regional play on May 15- 17. Florida has advanced to regionals every year since the inception of regional play in 1989.
Florida Prairie Dunes Golf Course will play host the national championship May 23-28.
The Gators will be looking to battle back in 2013-14 after losing three key players to graduation, but with the return of experienced players in J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.), Eric Banks (Truro, Canada), and A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) the Gators are ready to compete.
