Florida freshman second baseman Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) helped lead the 2013 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team to a silver medal July 7 in the International Softball Federation (ISF) X Jr. Women’s World Championship Finals (19 & U).
The USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team fell to Japan 4-0 after the game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to the inclement weather after two rain delays halted the game.
The Stars and Stripes finished the World Championships with a 9-1 record (Venezuela dropped out of the JWWC so the U.S. won that game via forfeit), outscoring their opponents 70-4.
Stewart finished the summer with Team USA batting .450 with seven runs, four RBI, and led the team with three triples. On July 3 in USA’s 15-0 win over Puerto Rico, Stewart went 3-for-3, scoring two runs, with two RBI, and a triple.
Stewart is one of nine former Gators who have had the chance to represent the United States, either at the Women’s National Team Selection Camp or as a member of the WNT or Junior Women’s National team.
Former Gator Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) will now pick up where Stewart left off with the Red, White and Blue, as the USA Women’s National Team starts competition in the 2013 World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City July 11-14.
A member of both the 2011 and 2012 USA Softball Women’s National Teams, Moultrie earned her third straight nod to represent the Red, White and Blue after helping Team USA to two World Cup of Softball gold medals in 2011 and 2012, a 2011 Pan American Games gold medal and, most recently, a silver medal at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship.
Moultrie used her talents to help Team USA down the Australians, 3-0, for Gold in the 2012 World Cup of Softball last year at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, marking Team USA’s sixth World Cup of Softball title.
Stewart and the 2013 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team began their Junior World Championship journey in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, on July 1, with a 10-0 rout against Great Britain, which ended in just four innings. On July 2, the team took on the Czech Republic winning 13-0, which also was concluded in four innings. On July 3, USA added two more wins in World Championship play in a 15-0 (three inning) decision over Puerto Rico and 4-0 win over host country Canada.
The USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team continued their dominance on Independence Day as they blanked Korea 10-0 (four innings) and New Zealand 7-0 (five innings), sending them into the playoff rounds against Australia.
On Friday, Team USA scored seven runs off of 11 hits, shutting out Australia 7-0 in five innings sending the team to a face-off with Japan Saturday. A series of clutch hitting performances helped the United States advance to the Gold Medal Game of the 2013 ISF JWWC after defeating Japan 4-0.
