Thursday June 27, 2013Beisel Earns Trip to Barcelona, Lochte Adds Third Event on Night Three at the National Championships
The Gators collected two second place finishes on the third night of competition at the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships. Current Gator junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) qualified in the 400 IM and former Gator Ryan Lochte secured a spot in the 100 fly.
Beisel secured her spot in Barcelona in tonight’s finals at the World Championship Trials. She finished second in the women’s 400m IM with a time of 4:34.50 to make the USA World Championship team in the event. Beisel was the 2012 Olympic silver medalist and the 2011 World Champion in the 400m IM.
Adding another event to his lineup at the World Championships was Lochte. He finished second in the 100m fly with his time of 51.71 to qualify in that even as well. So far he will swim the 200m free, 200m back and 100m fly in Barcelona.
Continuing to prove the Gators’ strength in the individual medley events, sophomore Carlos Omana (Miami, Fla.) finished sixth in the 400m IM for the men. He clocked in with a time of 4:18.59, which is a new personal-best in the event.
Swimming in the prelims for the men’s 400m IM were two more fellow men’s squad members. Junior Connor Signorin (East Windsor, N.J.) tallied a new personal-best time after touching the wall in 4:24.83. His time ranked 17th on the morning to just miss tonight’s B-Final. Finishing 25th was sophomore Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.) after he stopped the clock in a time 4:29.47.
In the 100m fly, freshman Natalie Hinds (Midland, Texas) had another solid swim to finish 19th. She finished in a time of 1:00.83 during the prelims. Then swimming his second event of the morning was Elliott, who took to the water in the 50m breast. He finished 20th in a time of 29.19.
