Wednesday June 26, 2013Lochte Wins Two on Second Night of Nationals to Book Ticket to Barcelona
Ryan Lochte and Conor Dwyer, former Gator swimmers, highlighted the second night at the National Championships. They both secured a spot on the USA National Team that will compete later this summer in the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona.
Lochte completed a tough double on the second night at the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships. He had both the 200 free and 200 back finals on his plate and delivered stellar performances in both. In the 200 free, Lochte went out strong and held onto the lead most of the race to post a time of 1:45.97 for the win. He then returned to the water shortly after for the 200 back where he jumped out to the lead once again and held on to finish in 1:55.16. His time in the 200 free was fifth fastest in the world and the 200 back was the third fastest.
Joining Lochte in the 200 free championship final was Dwyer. He finished second in a time of 1:46.25, the seventh fastest time in the world this year. The second place finish secures him a spot on the USA World Championship team in the event. He came into the event with the top time after swimming a 1:46.85 in prelims.
Five current Gators took to the water in during the second night of finals at the National Championships. Sophomore Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.) swam his way into the A-Final of the men’s 200 breast after swimming a time of 2:13.91 in prelims. He came back in the finals to finish eighth with a time of 2:16.06.
In the women’s 200 back, junior Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.), the 2012 bronze medalist in the event, swam a solid race to clock in third with a time of 2:07.64. Also swimming in the 200 back was freshman Ashlee Linn (Southfield, Mich.). Linn took third in the B-Final to finish 11th overall after posting a time of 2:13.23.
Sophomore Carlos Omana (Miami, Fla.) made an appearance in the B-Final of the 200 back for Florida. He clocked in 12th overall with a time of 2:00.60, improving on his prelim time of 2:01.25. Finishing 23rd overall in the 200 back was junior Connor Signorin (East Winsor, N.J.) in prelims this morning with his time of 2:02.83.
Closing out the night was freshman Natalie Hinds (Midland, Texas) in the 50 fly. Hinds competed in the A-Final and finished seventh overall after touching the wall in 27.11. She made the championship final of the 50 fly with her time of 27.08 in the prelims.
Tomorrow’s prelims will begin at 9 a.m. ET and will include the 200 free, 200 breast, 200 back and 50 fly.
