Monday June 17, 2013Ten Gators Named to 2013 Preseason All-SEC Team by Athlon Sports

Gainesville, Fla.

The University of Florida football team had 10 players selected to the Athlon Sports 2013 Preseason All-SEC Team, released on Monday, June 17. The Gators had two players selected on offense, six on defense and two special teams.

Four Gators were honored as first team selections, senior defensive lineman Dominique Easley, junior cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy, junior punter Kyle Christy and senior kickoff returner Andre Debose. Junior cornerback Marcus Roberson was the lone second-team honoree. Senior guard Jon Halapio and sophomore linebacker Antonio Morrison were named third-team, while the fourth-team included senior center Jonotthan Harrison, sophomore defensive end Dante Fowler and senior safety Jaylen Watkins.

Florida had two special teams selections, both named to the first-team. A 2012 Ray Guy Award finalist, Christy has emerged as one of the nation’s top punters in collegiate football. Last season, he was First Team All-SEC selection by the AP and coaches and was a Walter Camp Second Team All-American. He rated fifth in the country in punting average and first in the SEC.

Debose is returning as the school record holder for kickoff return average with an average of 27.4 yards per return. He also set the school for the longest kickoff return, running the ball back 99 yards for a touchdown in the 2011 Gator Bowl versus Ohio State.

Of the six defensive selections, Florida had two earn first-team all-conference. Easley played in and started 11 games in 2012. He collected 26 tackles on the season, including a team-best 4.0 sacks. Against Louisville in the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl, Easley recorded five tackles, 3.5 of which were tackles for a loss.

One of the Gators’ fastest players on the field, Purifoy played in all 13 games for the University of Florida last season. He forced three fumbles and blocked two kicks on special teams. In addition, Purifoy was fourth on the team with 51 tackles and added five pass breakups.

The team leader in pass breakups last season with 12, Roberson finished second in the SEC in passes defended with 14. Last season he tallied 23 total tackles, 18 solo, along with two interceptions.

Morrison had a standout freshman season after appearing in all 13 games and recording 34 tackles. He was instrumental in the win over rival Florida State after recording the first sack of his career and first forced fumble that UF recovered, leading to a score to take the lead.

Another true freshman, Fowler also played in all 13 games for UF and finished the season with 30 tackles, including 2.5 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss. He registered a tackle for loss in four of the last five games of the season. Joining him on the fourth-team was Watkins, who tallied 39 tackles on the season along with three interceptions and eight pass breakups.

On the offensive side of the ball, Halapio currently owns the most consecutive career starts on Florida’s offense with 27, while Harrison started all 13 games at center for the Gators.
