Saturday June 8, 2013UF's Johnny Magliozzi & Cody Dent Taken On Final Day Of MLB Draft

Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore right-hander Johnny Magliozzi (East Milton, Mass.) and senior shortstop Cody Dent (Boynton Beach, Fla.) have each heard his name called on the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday. Magliozzi went to New York Mets in the 17th round at No. 506, while Dent went in the 22nd round to the Washington Nationals at No. 676. The Boston Red Sox also chose UF starting quarterback Jeff Driskel (Oviedo, Fla.) in the 29th round with the 863rd choice.

The Gators have now had four players from head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s team chosen over the three-day event, joining junior right-hander Jonathon Crawford (Okeechobee, Fla.) (first round to the Detroit Tigers at No. 20) and junior left-hander Daniel Gibson (Lutz, Fla.) (seventh round to the Arizona Diamondbacks at No. 210).

In 29 appearances this season, including four starts, Magliozzi was 4-2 with a team-low 2.67 earned run average and recorded 12 saves, one shy of Florida’s single-season record. The righty was second on the squad with 57 strikeouts in 67.1 innings and held opponents to a .213 batting average. He tied his career-best effort with six strikeouts against Texas A&M at the SEC Tournament and versus Valparaiso at the NCAA Bloomington Regional. Magliozzi was 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 13 SEC outings and collected seven saves, highlighted by a pair during the series sweep of eighth-ranked South Carolina. Magliozzi had previously been taken in the 35th round by the Tampa Bay Rays coming out of high school in 2011.

Dent started 48 games in his final collegiate season, 37 at shortstop and 11 in center field, and saw action in 52 of the Gators’ 59 contests. He had a .169 batting average, with 17 walks, 15 runs, 13 RBI, a team-high 10 sacrifice hits and three doubles. Named to the 2013 SEC Community Service Team, Dent sported a .971 fielding percentage. A four-year letterwinner for the Orange and Blue who enjoyed three-straight trips to the NCAA College World Series, he was chosen to the CWS All-Tournament Team in 2011 and played in 184 games with 101 starts as a Gator.
