University of Florida junior golfer Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) was named to the 2013 SEC Community Service Team, the league offices announced today. The SEC names a community service team for each of its sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to the community through service efforts.

Along with being a key player in Florida’s run to its third-straight NCAA Championship appearance, Ulu volunteered numerous hours off the course in the Gainesville community. Ulu helped with the Miracle on Main Street, which provides families the opportunity to shop for presents donated through gifts from the local community. With the help of student-athletes like Ulu, more than 1,000 school children in the area received what might have been their only presents under the Christmas tree.

In connection with the Miracle on Main Street, Florida’s Office of Student Life also hosted a wrapping party that Ulu was a part of. Here, student-athletes helped wrap and organize the shoes to prepare them for delivery.

The junior golfer also participated in Gator Tracks, which provided shoes for 475 students from seven schools in Alachua County on free or reduced lunch.

On the course, Ulu compiled the fourth-best stroke average (75.8) on the team while also finishing tied for 73rd at last week’s NCAA Championship. This year, Ulu carded her two best rounds of her collegiate career after a 68 at both the Florida Challenge in January and the NCAA Central Regional earlier this month. She will return to the Gator squad next season as the only senior on the roster.
