Urbana, IL

Alexandra Cercone, Lauren Embree and Sofie Oyen will compete in the NCAA Singles Championships.

Florida senior Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) was awarded the top seed in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championships draw that was released by the NCAA Tennis Committee Tuesday. Junior Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) was seeded 9-16, while junior Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) is part of the national event that begins Wednesday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Atkins Tennis Center.

Embree is the third different Gator to be seeded No. 1 in the singles draw and her spot at the top of the draw marks the fourth time a Gator has been the favorite, as she joins Lisa Raymond (1992, 1993) and Allie Will (2012) as the other top-seeded Gators. Raymond went on to win the singles title both years, while Will advanced to the semifinals last season.

This is the fourth time Embree has earned a berth into the NCAA Singles Championships with her best finish coming in 2011 when she reached the semifinals before having to retire from injury at the start of a third set. Last year, Embree advanced to the round of 16.

Embree, who sports a 26-2 overall singles record this season and a 117-15 career mark, will play Arizona State’s No. 21-ranked Jacqueline Cako in the first round. Embree and Cako met in the first round of this year’s Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on October 4, with the Gator senior taking the 6-2, 6-3 decision en route to winning the collegiate grand slam event.

Oyen is competing in the NCAA Singles Championships for the second consecutive season. She reached the second round last year. The Gator junior, who sports a 28-8 singles record this season and an 80-24 career ledger, takes on TCU’s No. 44 Stefanie Tan and it will be the first meeting between the two.

Cercone is part of the national singles event for the second time in her career, also competing during her freshman year. Cercone has compiled a 26-9 overall record this year on the singles court and a 92-28 career mark. The Gator junior plays UNLV’s No. 59 Lucia Batta in the opening round.

Embree and Oyen also will pair in the 32-team doubles draw, which begins Thursday. The No. 11-ranked Gator tandem drew Stanford’s No. 28-ranked Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay in the first round.

Live scoring and video will be available throughout the event!
