Florida swept the Halifax Media Group's Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles in 2012-13.

Tuesday May 21, 2013Florida Sweeps Halifax Media Group Southeastern Conference All-Sports Titles

Gainesville, Fla.

Florida swept the Halifax Media Group's Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles in 2012-13.

A league-record of eight league titles led the University of Florida athletics program to a sweep of the 2012-13 Halifax Media Group's Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles. It is the 13th time the Gator program has taken the three titles. The determination of the SEC All-Sports standings came after the conclusion of the regular-season baseball schedule, the final league sport to award a title in 2012-13.

Did You Know…

·         Florida has claimed 213 Southeastern Conference team titles in its history, the most in the SEC. In the last 10 seasons, UF leads the league with 52 titles.

·         Florida equaled the SEC record with eight league titles in 2012-13. The record was set by UF with eight titles in 1991-92 and matched by UF in 2010-11 and Georgia in 2005-06.

·         Florida picked up six SEC Athlete of the Year honors in 2012-13.

·         Florida has now won 23 Overall SEC All-Sports trophies

·         Florida's first Overall SEC All-Sports title came in 1987-88.

·         Florida is the only league program to collect all three titles (overall, men’s and women’s) in a single season.

The Gator athletics program took the overall, men’s and women’s SEC All-Sports titles. UF is the only school to collect all three titles in a single season.

The overall SEC All-Sports title is the 23rd for Florida, while the Gator program also earned its 20th women's and 17th men’s titles.

This year, Florida claimed SEC titles in men’s basketball, women’s cross country, gymnastics, soccer, softball, men’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis and volleyball. That equals the league record of titles in a single season set by Florida in 1991-92 and equaled in 2010-11. Georgia also turned in eight league wins in 2005-06.

The Gators now own 52 titles since the 2003-04 academic year, the most by any conference school during the 10-year span. One other Florida sport claimed a league crown in 2013 as the Gator lacrosse team claimed a share of their third consecutive American Lacrosse Conference regular-season title.

“The competition in the Southeastern Conference is so strong. Quite often the same teams competing for league titles are also in the hunt for national hardware,” UF Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said. “We take much pride in the SEC All-Sports title because of the hard work of our coaches and student-athletes that went into winning it.”

With the addition of teams and a sport to the SEC this year, the Halifax Media Group made adjustments to the scoring formula. Points are awarded based on the number of competing teams in a sport (e.g. – 14 teams compete in SEC baseball, giving the winner 14 points, second gets 13, etc. Four teams compete in equestrian, awarding four points to the winner). A program’s points total is divided by the total number of teams competing in the sports the school fields and that quotient ranks the teams in the final Halifax Media Group standings. The sports of cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field are combined. A program's outdoor track finish makes up half, while the remaining two quarters are based on the cross country and indoor finishes.

The Florida women stayed on top for the seventh consecutive year and Tennessee was second followed by league newcomer Texas A&M.

In men’s competition, the Gators took first for the fifth consecutive year. Alabama was second followed by Georgia.

This is the second consecutive year the Halifax Media Group, which includes 14 newspapers throughout the Southeastern United States, has awarded the overall, men’s and women’s SEC All-Sport trophies. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group gave the awards from the 1994-95 through 2010-11 seasons. Prior to that, the league tabulated the SEC All-Sports totals.

UF is hopeful of finishing among the nation's top 10 most successful overall athletic programs for the 30th consecutive year when final national all-sports rankings are released June 27 or 28. Florida is the only school to finish among the nation's top 10 overall most successful athletic programs each year since 1983.

This is the second season the Halifax Media Group will hand out the SEC All-Sports Trophy. The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group coordinated the SEC All-Sports rankings from 1994-95 to 2010-11. Prior to that, the league tabulated the SEC All-Sports totals.
