Wednesday May 15, 2013Gators in Baton Rouge for NCAA South Regional

Baton Rouge, La.

The University of Florida men’s golf team is in Baton Rouge, La. for the 2013 NCAA South Regional, looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 13th consecutive season. Play will begin on Thursday, May 16 and run through Saturday, May 18 at the University Club.

“I think we are ready to play,” head coach Buddy Alexander stated. “We haven’t played in a while and the last time we played, we didn’t play particularly well. That sticks in your crawl a little a bit. Typically, you want to get back out there and play as quickly as possible. We had some exams to take care of and school to finish up. I think they are excited about going to play. I think Baton Rouge is a good spot for us.”

Since the inception of regional play in 1989, Florida has participated in this stage every season. From there, UF has gone and competed in the NCAA Championships every year but one. Currently, the team has qualified for the national tournament in each of the past 12 seasons, the longest current streak in the country.

Coach Alexander’s lineup for the event will comprise of seniors Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.), sophomores J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) and Eric Banks (Truro, Canada), and senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.). Each player has participated in at least one regional tournament in their collegiate careers.

“We are going to play Tommy Mou, instead of A.J. Crouch,” said Alexander. “Tommy is a senior. He has been around for a little bit. He’s played in a regional, two years ago. He played really well in the regional we had in Ocala a few years back. He played well in the SEC Tournament he played in a couple of years ago. Eric Banks beat him out of a spot last year. He and A.J. have been battling back and forth. I think Tommy is a little more consistent, shall we say. Obviously in this situation you would love to go win the golf tournament, but the real goal is to advance and I think that Tommy gives us the best chance for that. We will go with Tommy.”

Six regionals will be played this weekend, with 13 teams at three of the locations and 14 at the remaining three. The top-five finishers at each site will earn invitations to the 2013 NCAA Championships, which will be played at the Capital City Club in Woodstock, Ga.

“I do think we are a very capable team,” concluded Alexander. “I think they are fired up, ready to play. Hopefully, that’s the case because this is when it matters.”

Play will begin tomorrow morning at the par-72, 7,578 yard course. Live scoring will be available for all three rounds on Golfstat.com.
