Tuesday May 14, 2013Meagher Named Goalie of the Year; Five Gators Named All-Americans

Gainesville, Fla.

Senior goalie Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) was named the Synapse Sports Goalie of the Year and a total of five Florida Lacrosse players earned All-American honors, announced by the organization today.

Meagher, who is one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award, claims the honor for the second consecutive season.  She currently ranks top-10 in save percentage (5th, .504) and goals-against average (2nd, 6.54) while leading a Florida defense that allows just 6.50 goals per game and has held nine opponents to five goals or less. In addition, Meagher was named the first ever ALC Goalie of the Year this season and set a season-high 11 saves in a win over North Carolina.

Meagher also leads a group of four Gators who earned First-Team All-American selections along with seniors Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.), Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) and Sam Farrell (Millersville, Md.).  Sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) earned Second-Team All-American honors. All five Gators repeat as All-Americans from a season ago.

The trio of Cullen, Dashiell and Gilroy has paced the Gators offensive attack this season to the fourth-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging 15.05 goals per game. They also rank second in scoring margin, outscoring their opponents by an average of 8.55 goals. Cullen leads the Orange and Blue with 66 points (48 goals, 18 assists) and Gilroy and Dashiell each have a team-high 50 goals.

Gilroy and Dashiell are the team’s draw control specialists, recording a combined 113 draws this season and leading their team to 14.00 draws per game.

Farrell is currently leading the team with 24 caused turnovers along with 25 ground balls and 13 draw controls. Farrell caused a team-high six draws against Stony Brook and forced four turnovers in the ALC Championship game against Northwestern.

The No. 4 seed Gators (18-2) head to the NCAA Quarterfinals this Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y. to face the Orange (17-3) at the Carrier Dome in a 2 p.m. opening draw.
