Saturday February 24, 2001Softball Wins Sixth Straight, Beats UConn 6-3

TUCSON, Ariz.

Ashley Boone was 2-for-4 with two RBI vs. UConn.

The University of Florida softball team won its sixth straight with a 6-3 victory vs. UConn Saturday morning and improved to 3-0 in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Sophomore third baseman Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) tied career bests with three hits and three runs for the second consecutive outing. Mossadeghi was 3-for-3 and also had one RBI. Freshman Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) and senior first baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) each had two hits. The Gators (12-3) out-hit the Huskies (1-2) 9-7. It ended UF's five game streak with 10 or more hits.

UF scored three times in the second after squandering a bases-loaded situation in the first. Center fielder Amanda Judd (Cornville, Ariz./Mingus Union) walked and second baseman Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) singled. Third baseman Mossadeghi drove in Judd with a single and advanced to second thanks to an overthrow to the plate from left field. Freshman shortstop Garner drove in the next two runs with a base hit to center field.

UConn got one back in the fourth. First baseman Abbie Link led off with a double to left field. She moved around on a single and scored on a sac fly to right field. Mossadeghi answered by scoring on an Boone double in UF's half of the inning.

Garner's base hit was all it took to give UF two more in the sixth. Mossadeghi, who reached on a walk, cam in, and Boone grounded out to shortstop to score Garner.

The Huskies threatened with a two-out rally in the seventh. They scored twice on a single, but Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) forced a pop up for the win. Landry improved to 5-1 and had four strikeouts. She gave up seven hits, three earned runs and three walks in her third complete game. UConn went through three pitchers, but Barbara Cook (1-2 received the loss. She threw four and a third innings, allowing nine hits, earning all six runs and four walks.

The Gators play Southern Utah Saturday at 9 p.m. (Eastern) then face host No. 2 Arizona Sunday at 3 p.m.
