Friday February 23, 2001Softball Defeats Drake 9-1 in Five Innings

TUCSON, Ariz.

Jenilee Garner was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI vs. Drake.

The University of Florida softball team won its fifth straight game and second of the day with a 9-1, five-inning victory vs. Drake in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Leadoff batter Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) and freshman Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville), batting in the two-spot, went 3-for-3 as UF combined for 11 hits, 10 of them were from the first five batters. It was the fifth straight contest the Gators had 10 or more hits. Drake (1-5) had 10 hits, but UF forced it to strand 13 runners.

"We were on fire today," Coach Karen Johns said. "I knew with the way we were hitting, we had to get them in five (innings). I thought the top half of our lineup was a force."

Mossadeghi started off the game for UF with a double and scored on a Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) single. Freshman Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) sacrificed in the second run with a fly out to right field. Drake scored its run in the top of the second on two singles and a fielder's choice.

With two outs in the second, UF ripped out four consecutive hits, including a Garner double, to score three times. Mossadeghi led off the fourth with a walk and stole second. Garner sent her in with a base hit. Prieto singled and scored Garner. An error and two base hits in the fifth ended the game due to the NCAA Eight-run Mercy Rule. Mossadeghi and Garner each drove in a run. Garner finished with three RBI.

Sophomore Nicole Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) threw three and a third innings, allowing eight hits, a run and two walks, and striking out three. Coach Karen Johns went to the bullpen for senior Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) after Michael loaded the bases a second time with just a 5-1 advantage. Michael (3-1) was credited with the win, and Landry earned her first save. Landry struck out three in one and two-thirds innings. She yielded two hits and a walk.

UF plays Uconn Saturday at 11 a.m. and Southern Utah at 9 p.m. (Eastern).
