Florida softball dual-threat sophomore Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) picked up SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season Monday for her contributions to UF’s series win over No. 23 Georgia this past weekend.
Haeger turned in a squad-best .556 clip (5-for-9), including two bombs and a sac fly, accounting for five RBI through UF’s second-to-last regular-season series against Georgia at home. The weekly honor marks Florida’s seventh of the campaign with just one series remaining at South Carolina May 3-5 before the Orange and Blue embark on the 2013 SEC Tournament in Lexington, Ky., May 8-11.
UF downed UGA 5-2 Saturday and blanked the Dawgs Sunday, 5-0, to win the series after Georgia took the series-opener, 3-2, Friday. Florida improved to 11-4 (.733) against top-25 competition this season with two victories over its SEC Eastern Division rival en route to a 47-6 overall record, 16-5 in league play.
Haeger’s sac fly in the series opener plated one of Florida’s two runs in the bottom of the seventh as UF strung together a late rally, while her three-run blast Saturday was the game-winner – her eighth game-winning RBI of the season for UF. Haeger went 2-for-3 in the second game of the series, erasing a two-run deficit for the Gators to eventually square the set with the Bulldogs on Senior Day at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Haeger was on double duty Saturday, also picking up the win in the circle. The righty allowed just two earned runs and fanned nine through a complete-game effort to improve to 13-2 overall, 4-2 in league decisions.
Sunday in the series finale, Haeger put on her best performance in conference play so far, a 3-for-3 display with two singles and a homer to tie a career high for hits, while her three runs scored Sunday set a new career high for the second-year Gator as UF clinched the series win, it’s seventh in league play.
Haeger now ranks third in the SEC overall in RBI (55) and homers (16) and third through 2013 conference play in homers (8), while checking in fifth in RBI (21). She ranks second on the Gators’ squad in multiple-hit games, with 14, and also has a team-high 13 games with multiple RBI. Earlier this season, Haeger reached base in a staggering 24 straight games and strung together a season-best 10 game hit streak from Feb. 22-March 8.
Tennessee (15-4, .789), Florida (16-5, .762) and LSU (15-6, .714) round out the top three institutions in the standings heading into the final regular-season weekend, with both SEC Tournament seeding and the regular-season title up for grabs. The No. 3/2 Lady Vols will visit No. 11 Missouri next weekend, the Gators face the Gamecocks on the road in Columbia and No. 12 LSU will head to Athens to finish up conference play at No. 23 Georgia. Florida has three SEC Championships (1998, 2008, 2009) and has been a top-five national seed in the NCAA Tournament the past five years.
