Friday April 26, 2013Chicago Bears Select Jonathan Bostic 50th Overall in 2013 NFL Draft
Former University of Florida linebacker Jonathan Bostic was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 50th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Bostic is the third Gator to be selected in this year’s draft, joining defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and safety Matt Elam.
“I’m very proud of Jon, he really worked hard for this moment,” said head coach Will Muschamp. “Last offseason, we sat down with Jon and told him the things he needed to work on and he really attacked those things. His hard work has paid off now and we wish him the best.”
Bostic completed his senior season for the Gators last year and becomes the first UF linebacker to be chosen in the NFL Draft since Brandon Spikes was selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Bostic is the highest Gator linebacker drafted since Jevon Kearse in 1999.
Chicago has drafted 19 Gators, second-most among all NFL teams. Most recently the Bears selected Major Wright in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Bostic appeared in 51 games, making 32 starts in his Gator career. He finished his career with 237 total tackles, and had 19.0 TFL, 7.5 sacks, seven pass breakups, five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Bostic was a four year letter-winner for the Gators.
In 2012, he started all 13 games at middle linebacker. He was third on the team with 68 tackles on the season, and fifth with 6.5 TFL for a total of 23 yards for loss. Bostic was also tied for second on the team with 3.0 sacks and tied for fourth in interceptions (2) and third in quarterback hurries (4). Bostic earned numerous honors following his senior year, including Coaches’ All-SEC Second Team on defense, Phil Steele Midseason All-SEC Second Team (LB), Butkus Award Watch List (LB), Lombardi Award Preseason Watch list (LB), Coaches’ Preseason All-SEC Second Team (LB), Phil Steele Preseason All-SEC (LB) and the Preseason Associated Press All-SEC Third Team (LB).
