Thursday April 25, 2013Gators Ashanée Dickerson & Marissa King to compete in Professional Gymnastics Challenge

Gainesville, Fla.

The 2013 Professional Gymnastics Challenge will include two Gators - Marissa King (l) and Ashanée Dickerson.

They may have ended their collegiate careers helping the Gators hoist their first NCAA Gymnastics Championships team trophy last weekend in Los Angeles, but seniors Ashanée Dickerson and Marissa King will again be performing next month, this time in The Professional Gymnastics Challenge. The competition is set for May 10-11 in Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena.

This event includes Olympic and world renowned gymnasts plus gymnasts just finishing their collegiate careers. Those scheduled to appear include Germany’s Marcel Nguyen, 2012 Olympic all-around and parallel bars silver medalist and Chellsie Memmel, a six-time World medalist and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic silver medal team. PGC is a skill-for-skill competition with teams consisting of both men and women squaring off against each other in a challenge of various gymnastics skills.

Like team sports such as football and basketball, there is an offense and defense aspect to the Pro Gymnastics Challenge. The team on the offensive performs a skill or sequence of skills after which the defensive team attempts to do that skill or sequence of skills better. Referees determine the winner and that team gains the point or points and offensive control. If there is a tie, an audience vote picks the winner. The first team to 10 points is the winner with the speed rope the only exception as that event is a time challenge.

Both Gators participating in the PGC finished their outstanding collegiate careers last weekend. Over the course of their Gator careers, each tallied 11 All-America honors. The 68 event titles Dickerson claimed over the last four seasons stands fourth all-time on UF’s career list. Her nine titles in NCAA regional competition, including the 2013 vault title, are second all-time for Gator program. King picked up three All-America first team honors last weekend, including tying for third in the NCAA all-around. She was the 2011 NCAA vault champion. Both turned in Gator season-best marks of 9.975 – Dickerson on vault/floor and King on floor – in 2013.

The PGC airs tape-delayed on ESPN2 on May 20, 21 and 22 with times to be announced.
