Gator soccer celebrated its 2012 season Monday evening.

The University of Florida soccer team held its annual awards banquet Monday evening in the Gator Room located in the Heavener Football Complex.

Senior defensive backs Jo Dragotta and Holly King shared the Players’ Choice Award, which is awarded to the athlete who makes the biggest impression both on and off the field, as voted on by the members of the team. In 2012, the duo both appeared on the All-Southeastern Conference first team and King was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. King also was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America third team. In their senior year, both turned in career-high offensive numbers. Dragotta was third among the Gators with 18 points off of seven goals and four assists while King was fifth with 14 points (five goals, four assists). Both earned SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades as seniors and King made her second consecutive appearance on the NSCAA Scholar All-America first team selection.


For the second consecutive year, the Most Valuable Player on offensive went to senior Erika Tymrak. The NSCAA first team selection led the Gators with 30 points off of nine goals and 12 assists. She was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and also earned her second career SEC Tournament MVP honor. She finished tied for third on Gators’ career charts in assists (40), sixth in points (104), tied for seventh in game-winning goals (11) and eighth for goals (32). In 2012 play, Tymrak was the SEC leader (all matches) in assists, second in game-winning goals and third in points. She also was a semifinalist for college soccer’s highest individual honor, the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy.


The Most Valuable Defensive Player went to freshman Christen Westphal. Westphal started all but the season opener as a center back. She led Florida’s field players with average of 87.2 minutes per match, playing the entirety of 20 matches. A NSCAA All-South Region third team selection, Westphal also appeared on the SEC second team and was a SEC All-Tournament selection after playing the entirety of the Gators’ three matches. She also appeared on Soccer America’s and’s national all-freshman second teams.


Gator senior McKenzie Barney is the 2012 Leadership Award recipient. Barney finished her career sixth on the Gator charts with 12 game-winning goals, seventh with 32 goals and eighth in points (72). She earned both 2012 Capital One Academic All-District and NSCAA Scholar All-South Region third team recognition as well as appearing on the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive year.


The Iron Gator Award went to redshirt freshman Lindsey Cooper for her strength and conditioning work in- and off-season. Senior center back Kathryn Williamson picked up the Erin Baxter Effort Award, given to a player who pushes the team to higher levels. Williamson missed the first starts of her career after being sidelined after 2012’s fifth match with a torn meniscus. She worked to return to the Gator lineup for NCAA action.


The trio of sophomore Jennifer Larrick, Barney and Williamson shared the Karyn Hall Academic Excellence Award for their overall academic achievement. The Robin Fulton Academic Achievement Award, given to the player who displays hard work and determination in the classroom, was awarded to junior midfielder Caroline Triglia. She was among the 16 Gators who earned SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades in 2012.


The 2012 Gators posted a 19-5-1 record, which including claiming the SEC title in the first season of the expanded league with a record of 11-2. It was the 12th title in the program’s 18-year history. Florida also took its 10th SEC Tournament title with a 3-0 victory over Auburn in Orange Beach, Ala.


Florida advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 and placed No. T-8 on the final NSCAA rankings. It was the Gators’ 16th NCAA appearance and the ninth time Florida advanced to at least the Round of 16.


Florida had a national-high four draftees in the National Women’s Soccer League draft – Dragotta (Boston Breakers/third round), King (Washington Spirit/third round), Tymrak (FC Kansas City/second round) and Williamson (Portland Thorns FC/first round). One additional member of the 2012 Gator team, Adriana Leon, was among Canada’s players allocated in the draft and she is part of the Boston Breakers.
