Monday April 22, 2013Gilroy, Farrell Named ALC Players of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) and senior defender Sam Farrell (Millersville, Md.) have been named ALC Players of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.

The honors push Florida’s weekly award total to 11 for the season and marks the third time two players have earned awards in the same week. Farrell becomes the fifth different Gator and sixth defender overall to earn defensive player of the week honors while Gilroy earns her third offensive award.

Gilroy led the Gators' offensive unit that racked up 22 goals en route to a 22-4 win over No. 4 Northwestern. Gilroy chipped in a season-high seven points on five goals and two assists as one of seven Gators to score multiple goals. Gilroy got the Gators on the board quickly against the 'Cats, heading down the field to score just 30 seconds into the contest at Dizney.  She scored five goals on six shots and added five draw controls and a ground ball.  As a whole, the Florida offense tied the most goals scored by a Northwestern opponent in their history and the most since 2002.  They also tied their offensive production for the season, as they also scored 22 goals against Stetson on March 19.

Farrell led a defensive unit that held No. 4 Northwestern to 18 shots on the day, including four in the second half, to help guide the Gators to their third-straight win over the ‘Cats.  Farrell also had the duty of guarding Northwestern's leading scorer Erin Fitzgerald, who ranked eighth in the nation with 3.29 goals per game, to two goals on the day (one on a free position).  The Florida defense held Northwestern to its lowest scoring total in 210 matches dating back to a 14-3 loss to Syracuse in 2003.

The No. 1 seed Florida (16-1, 4-1 ALC) is gearing up for the ALC Tournament on May 2-5 hosted by Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. The Orange and Blue will face the winner of Johns Hopkins and Ohio State on May 3 at 4 p.m. at Homewood Field.
