Tyler McCumber finished in third for the second straight year (Robert Matre)

Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) tied for third place individually to lead the University of Florida men’s golf team to a 10th place finish at the 2013 SEC Championship on Sunday, April 21 at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. The team registered a third-round score of 290 (+10), tying Alabama for the lowest score of the field, and completed the event in 880 strokes (+40).

“Tyler had a great week,” head coach Buddy Alexander commented. “He played some terrific golf and I was really proud of him. He was really fun to watch, just the way he controlled his emotions. It was just terrific.”

McCumber tallied three birdies against two bogeys en route to a final round 69 (-1). He completed the tournament in 209 strokes (-1), his best 54-hole score of the season, and for the second consecutive year he recorded a top-three finish at the conference championship. In last year’s edition, McCumber tied for third place, as well.

Sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was the team’s second-lowest scorer on the final day at the par-72, 6,898 yard course. Banks scored two birdies against three bogeys for the third round, finishing at one-over par. It marked Banks’ best round at the Sea Island Golf Club in his University of Florida career. He recorded a 227 (+17) for the three-round event.

Classmate J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) completed the final round in 74 strokes (+4) and was 12-over par for the tournament. He tied for 36th place and was the Gators’ second-lowest scorer for the conference championship.

Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) were the final competitors for the University of Florida. Vogel was six-over par on Sunday, while Crouch was eight-over. The Cooper City, Fla. native finished the tournament in 226 strokes (+16), while the rookie carded a 231 (+21).

Alabama successfully defended its 2012 crown, taking home the 2013 SEC Championship with a team score of 848 (+8). Arkansas junior Sebastian Cappelen was the individual champion, recording a 202 (-8) for the conference championship.

“Other than Tyler, there were not many positives,” Alexander concluded. “We need to take a look in the mirror. Right now, we have to restore some confidence and get back on right the path.”

The team will be back in action at the NCAA Regionals in May. Regionals competition will begin on May 16 and end on May 18.
