Low scores were nearly non-existent in the first round of the SEC Women’s Golf Championship for all teams Friday as the fifth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team completed the first day of play in 11th place at 27-over (315). Even with the high team scores, the leading team, LSU, sits at the top of the board at 15-over (303), with only 18 shots separating the first-place team from the last place team.
Florida was paced by some consistent play by sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain), who turned around a four-over (40) first nine into nine-straight pars on the back nine to stay at four-over for the rest of the day and finish in a tie for 12th, just three shots back of leader, Sarah Harris of Kentucky and Stani Schiavone of Ole Miss. Hedberg had three-straight bogeys on holes four, five and six and then a fourth on No. 8, but righted the ship on the par four, ninth hole, to run off 10 pars in a row.
With teams scoring very few birdies, each red number seemed crucial as the leading team, LSU, had a combined 10 birdies on the first day. Those under-par holes were enough to keep it at the top of the standings going into the second day, but is only one shot ahead of second-place, Alabama.
For Florida, only two birdies were scored, both by freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia), but her number of bogeys and double-bogeys out-numbered the birdies as she finished her first round at eight-over (80), one of her highest rounds of the year. Orehek is coming off her best collegiate tournament last month at the Bryan National Collegiate and will look to turn that number around tomorrow as she will start Saturday’s round in a tie for 47th.
Much like her teammate, senior Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) couldn’t get anything going on her first nine after three bogeys and a double-bogey on the par three, fourth hole, but then had one more bogey on No. 11, before finishing with seven-straight pars. Lendl completed a round of six-over (78) to finish the first day of play in a tie for 27th, just five shots back of the lead.
As for the remaining two Gators in the lineup, junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey) had the fourth lowest score for UF on Friday, but it was only her third over 80 score of the season. Ulu finished the day with a nine-over (81) to be in a tie for 54th place going into Saturday’s second round.
Finally, senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) fell victim to two double-bogeys along with six bogeys with no birdies to card a 10-over (82). It’s only her second round of 80 or higher for the year and she finished the day in a tie for 60th.
The second round of the SEC Championship will continue tomorrow with 18 more holes. Because of course conditions, all tee times have been pushed back for a second-straight day. The first tee times are set for 11 a.m. The first Gator will go off No. 10 at 12:22 p.m. and run until 1:10 p.m. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com and a full recap with complete results will be posted on GatorZone.com following each day’s play.
