Florida junior menís tennis player Florent Diep was named the SEC Menís Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Wednesday. Itís the first honor by a Gator this season and first since Bob van Overbeek was honored in February of 2012.
Diep, a native of Paris, France, had one of his best weekends of the season, defeating two ranked opponents in key SEC matches. On Friday, he provided the clinching point in a 4-1 upset of No. 7 Ole Miss in Oxford with a three-set victory over 84th-ranked William Kallberg. Diep also paired with Gordon Watson to help the Gators win the doubles point in the match.
Sunday, Diep and Watson again won their doubles match against No. 13 Mississippi State. In singles, Diep stormed past No. 50 Malte Stropp in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to give the Gators a 3-1 lead in the match.
The Florida menís tennis team is home for three matches this week. At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, UF will face Bethune-Cookman at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators will wrap up the regular season and †SEC play this weekend, hosting No. 8 Kentucky on Friday at 5 p.m. and No. 13 Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1 p.m.
