Wednesday February 21, 2001Winthrop Defeats Gator Baseball 14-5
For the second straight game Winthrop jumped on No. 20 Florida in the first three innings, 8-0 this afternoon, and went on to win a 14-5 decision Wednesday at McKethan Stadium.
Winthrop starter Jeremy Herauf (3-0) earned the victory for the Eagles after throwing 8.0 innings and scattering 11 hits and five runs. Herauf finished with seven strikeouts.
The Eagles scored four runs in their half of the first using four walks and a double to go up 4-0. Winthrop added a run in the second on a Bennett Stapf RBI groundout and three runs in the third on Ben Thurmond’s RBI single, Jordan Webb’s sacrifice fly and Todd Leather’s RBI single.
Florida starter Jimmy Ramshaw (0-1) took the loss facing 5 batters giving up a double and four walks. It was Ramshaw’s first start since February 4, 2000 when he pitched against Miami.
Tom Potter threw 2.0 innings, struck out two and allowed one hit. Ben Harrison finished with a career-high three hits, Brian Rose and Kevin Estrada each collected two hits apiece. Pat Osborn extended his hit streak to 10 games.
It was the first time since Feb. 13 & 14, 1987 that Florida was swept by an unranked opponent at home (Tampa).
This weekend, Florida will host Florida State in a two-game series on Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.). Saturday’s game will be televised live by Sunshine Network. Both games will broadcast by the Gator Radio Network.
