Tuesday February 20, 2001Softball Sweeps Hofstra, Extends Win Streak to 3

Gainesville, FL

Bree Berger hit UF's first homer this year.

The University of Florida softball team swept Hofstra 4-2 and 6-2 to extend its winning streak to three games and concluded a season-long, 12-game home stand Tuesday night at the Florida Softball Stadium.

Sophomore catcher Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) knocked out her second career homer in the first game, highlighting a night in which UF (9-3) recorded 10 hits in each game. Berger's homer, the first this year for UF, was a solo shot over down the left field line.

"I hit it on the handle of the bat, so it wasn't a solid shot," Berger said. "But it got the job done. It put a smile on my face, and I think it gave the team a boost."

More importantly, it gave UF some breathing room after a three-run third inning put the Gators ahead by just one. Hofstra (0-7) scored with two outs in the second on an error. Then in the third, right fielder Lisa Ciavardini hit her own solo homer to go up 2-0.

Freshman pitcher Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest) shut down the Pride the rest of the way. Moore (3-1) allowed seven hits, one earned run and fanned three in her first complete game. Berger, Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) and Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) each finished with two hits.

Senior Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) threw six and two-thirds scoreless innings in the nightcap. Landry (4-1) struck out six before allowing Hofstra's runs. Sophomore Nikki Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) came in relief and forced the final out.

"We were happy the whole way, until we gave up the shutout," Coach Karen Johns said. "But, I think Renise threw some good pitches."

The Gators had a five-run third inning on four hits. Senior Emily Marino's (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) third double this season drove in two. Hofstra's Kelly Blois allowed one on a wild pitch, another on a walk and the fifth on a Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) single. Garner sacrificed to center field and scored Walden to make it 6-0 in the sixth.

Garner, Walden and senior Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) also had a pair of hits in that game. Garner and Boone extended their hitting streaks to seven games.

Johns liked her team's offense tonight. "We got some good at-bats. We're very pleased that we got the big hits when we needed them. I felt the flow was better tonight."

The Gators will take the confidence they built tonight into five games they'll play at No. 3 Arizona's Wildcat Invitational Feb. 23-25 in Tucson, Ariz. UF will play the Wildcats, UConn, Drake, McNeese State and Southern Utah in its first road trip.
