Monday April 1, 2013Gator Softball Pitcher Hannah Rogers Picks Up Second Consecutive SEC Pitcher of the Week Award
Florida softball junior ace Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) used three wins and a save in the last week of play to improve to 20-2 (1.12 ERA) in the circle for the Orange and Blue (35-3, 10-2 SEC), earning SEC Pitcher of the Week accolades for the second consecutive week.
Rogers tossed UF’s epic mid-week clash against FSU March 17, a walk-off thriller in extras, before leading the Gators to their second SEC series sweep over Ole Miss March 29-31 in Oxford, Miss. Rogers’ SEC weekly award marks UF’s fifth of the season and the Gators’ fourth straight.
Rogers has allowed just four earned runs in her last 44.0 innings pitched, dating back to UF’s March 20 mid-week match-up with USC Upstate. She turned in a 1.12 ERA through the last week of play, picking up three complete-game wins, one against FSU and two against Ole Miss, before coming on for her second save of the season in the series finale against the Rebels Sunday.
The righty ranks first in the league standings through conference play in wins (7), saves (2) and ERA (0.84). Overall on the season, Rogers paces the SEC with her 20 victories, while checking in second with her 1.12 ERA on the year. She entered the last week of play ranked sixth in the country in wins and 13th in ERA, with the new weekly rankings released each Monday evening.
Rogers tossed her sixth complete-game shutout of the season in the first of UF’s two games against Ole Miss Sunday, as she’s now played a part in nine of Florida’s 14 shutouts – six solo and three combined. Her eight innings of work against FSU last Wednesday tied a season high for innings pitched. Rogers fanned 21 batters combined against the Seminoles, who are receiving votes in both national pols, and the Rebels.
On the season, Florida is 6-2 against the top 25, led by Rogers’ four top-six victories in the circle (then-No. 3 Cal, No. 5 Oregon, No. 1 Alabama and No. 6/7 Tennessee). UF added its 13th come-from-behind and fifth walk-off win of the year against FSU in eight innings Wednesday. The Gators are now 4-2 in extras, have smashed eight grand slams this season, including two last week, own 10 mercy-rule wins and 14 shutouts. Florida’s sweep over Ole Miss made it four SEC series wins, two by sweep – Arkansas and Ole Miss.
The Gators used five doubles, a triple and seven homers to help Rogers out offensively at the dish last week. The Orange and Blue knocked in 23 RBI to opponents’ 10 and out-scored its opposition 27-11.
Rogers and Florida will kick off a five-game home stand Wednesday with UCF before playing host to Mississippi State in a three-game SEC series April 5-7, followed by hosting in-state opponent USF April 10 for the second mid-week contest between the two squads this season.
First pitch between the Gators and Knights is slated for 6 p.m. from UF’s Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium April 3.
