Monday April 1, 2013Gators to Play WNIT Semifinal at Drexel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The University of Florida women’s basketball team has advanced to the national semifinals of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament and will play at Drexel at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Gators (22-14) earned an 85-80 victory on Saturday at James Madison, while the Dragons (26-10) played and won at Auburn 56-43 on Saturday in their quarterfinal game.
The other semifinal features Utah (22-13) playing at Kansas State (19-17) on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
This is the second time in program history the Gators have reached the semifinals of a national postseason tournament, not including the 1985 team’s run to the final of the NWIT that was an eight-team event. Florida won four games to advance to the 2000 WNIT championship game and lost to host Wisconsin, 75-74.
Florida’s farthest run in the NCAA Tournament came in 1997, when the Gators advanced to the Elite Eight and lost to Old Dominion, 53-51.
Florida has won all four games on the road to advance to the WNIT semifinal, defeating FIU, 75-68, on March 21 in the first round, topping Winthrop, 85-53, on Monday in the second round and earning a thrilling 67-65 win at Charlotte on Wednesday in the round of 16.
Drexel began its WNIT run with home wins against Iona, 59-50, and Harvard, 82-72, before capturing road wins at Bowling Green, 50-47, and Auburn.
Wednesday will be the first-ever meeting between Florida and Drexel in women’s basketball.
Drexel is the third different team from the Colonial Athletic Association the Gators are playing this season. Florida defeated Georgia State, 84-65, on Nov. 11 and downed James Madison, which finished second in the regular-season standings behind Delaware and ahead of Drexel.
