Friday March 29, 2013First Day at Bryan National Collegiate Proves Tough For No. 5 Gator Women's Golf

Greensboro, N.C.

The fifth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team had a tough first round at the Bryan National Collegiate, shooting a 304 (+16), to be in a tie for 12th place heading into round two. Only two teams shot under par on Friday, but the round was one of UF’s highest of the season and will give them some work to do with two rounds left in competition.

Individually, sophomore Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain) was the top Gator after round one as she carded a 75 (+3) and will be in a tie for 33rd going into round two. Only seven shots separate her from the leader, Elizabeth Brightwell of Virginia, who finished the first day with a four-under (68).

Virginia had four of its five players finish round one in the top 16 of individuals with three coming in the top three. Those rounds, helped the Cavaliers take over the top spot in the team standings at seven-under (281) and will have a five-shot lead over second-place Vanderbilt, which sits at two-under.

Even though the scores weren’t exactly what UF was looking for in the first round, Hedberg’s round started off well with a birdie at No. 10, but she only carded one more birdie the rest of the way as she had five bogeys to drop to three-over after 18 holes.

Junior Elcin Ulu (Istanbul, Turkey), who was coming off her best tournament as a Gator at the SunTrust Gator Invite, actually found herself in the top-25 before making the turn as she parred out the first eight holes she played. But, on her ninth hole, the course’s 18th, Ulu dropped in a bogey, her first of the day. She rebounded well to make birdie on two of the next three holes, but suffered setback again with a double-bogey on the par four, second hole. Ulu went on to make three more bogeys to finish with a 76 (+4) and will be a tie for 45th going into round two.

The Gators were able to get a little bit of consistency from their No. 5 player in freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia), who also came into the clubhouse with a four-over (76). Orehek, in only her second tournament back from injury, kept the bogey number low in her round, but wasn’t able to add any birdies to her score. The 76 is her third-best round of the spring and she will look to build on that during Saturday’s second round.

As for the remaining two Gators in the field, good rounds were hard to come by as senior Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) shot a 77 (+5), while Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) came in with an 81 (+9). Piccio currently sits in a tie for 56th place, while Lendl will start Saturday’s round in 81st place.

Play will continue tomorrow with the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate and live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com. The first groups are set to tee off at 8:20 a.m., with Florida going off at 9:05 a.m. on the tenth tee. Full tee times can be found on GolfStat.com.
