Gainesville, Fla.

The No. 3 Gator softball team will renew its rivalry with Florida State Wednesday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, the first of two Sunshine Showdowns between the two programs this season. First pitch between the Gators and Seminoles is 6 p.m. and the contest will air live on SunSports, with Larry Vettel and Megan Bush on the call.

The Share A Little Sunshine Showdown, Florida vs. Florida State Game is presented by Visit Florida. Share a Little Sunshine is Visit Florida’s campaign to encourage all Floridians to invite their friends and families to Florida to boost tourism and help our state’s economy.

Florida (31-1, 7-2 SEC) and Florida State (26-10, 5-1 ACC) will first meet Wednesday and then again April 17 when the Gators visit Tallahassee for the second of two meetings in 2013.

The Gators will look to junior captain and reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) to lead the way in the non-conference clash. UF holds the series edge, 16-13, over FSU, including an 8-6 advantage at home in Gainesville. Florida is riding a nine-game win streak against Florida State heading into Wednesday’s match-up and the Gators were 1-0 against the Noles last season, taking the 9-1 six-inning victory in Tallahassee March 12, 2012.

Florida, which checked in at No. 2 in the first RPI rankings of the season Monday, ranks second in the country in win-loss percentage (.912), fourth in the nation in ERA (1.41), fifth in fielding percentage (.979), eighth in both scoring (7.18) and homers per game (1.32) and ninth in stolen bases per game (2.24). Freshman Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) ties for the national lead in triples this season, with six, after knocking her single-season school-record sixth in the series finale against Arkansas Saturday.

Rogers ranks sixth in the country with her 17 wins in the circle (17-2) and checks in 13th in ERA (1.13), while sophomore Lauren Haeger’s (Peoria, Ariz.) 12 long balls this season place her eighth in the NCAA.

LAST TIME OUT FOR FLORIDA

The University of Florida softball squad improved to 31-3 overall and 7-2 in SEC play this past week with a series sweep over Arkansas at home and a mid-week victory over USC Upstate last Wednesday. The Gators tacked on their ninth and 10th run-rules of the season, along with three shutouts through the last week of play. The Orange and Blue have now won all three conference series thus far in 2013, with one sweep over the Razorbacks. Rogers led the charge for the Gators in the circle over the past week, earning three wins to improve to 17-2 in the circle, while picking up her first save of the season Friday. The righty fanned 26 batters through 19.0 innings pitched and registered a perfect 0.00 ERA to lower her season average to 1.13. Rogers yielded just eight hits through the four appearances. Stewart knocked her single-season UF record sixth triple this year in the series finale over the Razorbacks to aid in her seven-game reached base streak, while Haeger checked in with a team-best .444 clip. Haeger had two extra-base hits in two consecutive games (2b and HR in both), knocking her fifth homer in a span of four games for the game-winning RBI in the series opener vs. Arkansas, her sixth game-winner of the season. Haeger accounted for a team-best seven RBI, five runs and six walks through the weekend. Senior Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.) launched UF’s game-winning, walk-off homer Saturday for the series sweep over the Razorbacks, while also driving in the two game-winning runs with a double in the nightcap of Friday’s UF | Arkansas doubleheader to clinch the series for the Orange and Blue.

SCOUTING FSU

The Seminoles enter the mid-week showdown with Florida boasting a 26-10 overall record and 5-1 record in ACC play so far this season. FSU is coming off a weekend conference series where the Seminoles took a three-game set over North Carolina using two wins in a Sunday doubleheader to earn the series win. Sophomore hurler Lacey Waldrop led the charge for the Seminoles, picking up the two victories in the circle to improve to 12-4 for FSU. The Noles additionally used three homers in game one to fuel the day, bringing their season total to 39, the second-most in school history, as the squad is chasing the school-record 49 posted in 2007.

Waldrop leads FSU in the circle with a 1.45 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 106.0 innings pitched. Alongside Waldrop, Monica Perry (1.73 ERA; 13-6) has been just as effective, fanning 131 batters in 109.1 innings pitched. Waldrop owns two saves on the season, while Perry earned her first save last weekend. Both Jessica Nori and Bailey Schinella have seen time in the circle, Nori with one save to contribute to the team’s four this year.

At the plate, junior Courtney Senas boasts a .384 batting clip with a team-best 43 hits. Senas owns six doubles, three triples and 11 homers, while fellow classmate Kelly Hensley checks in with a .362 clip, nine doubles, while also having knocked 11 long balls this season. Senas is 11-12 on the base paths for FSU, while senior Morgan Bullock is a threat with 10-11 stolen bases.
