Monday March 25, 2013Stolins, Gilroy Named ALC Players of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Senior defender Kayla Stolins (Glen Arm, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) have been named ALC Players of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.

Gilroy earned her second Offensive Player of the Week award of the season while Stolins earns her first career Defensive Player of the Week honor.  In all, Florida has now won four Defensive Player of the Week nods and eight total weekly accolades for the 2013 season.  It also marks the second time two Gators have earned honors in the same week.

Gilroy, who also earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 12, led the Gators in scoring last week against Stetson and Ohio State with six points on five goals and an assist.  The sophomore midfielder went 5-for-9 on shots last week for a .556 shot percentage and 5-for-8 on shots on goal for a .889 shots on goal percentage.  In addition, Gilroy recorded two ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers.

She shined against ALC foe Ohio State, recording all six points to help the Gators erase an early 1-0 deficit on Saturday. She chipped in the final two goals of the game, helping the Gators win their 11th straight ALC game, 13-7 over the Buckeyes.  Gilroy was part of an offense that scored 35 goals and 43 points in two games and recording a team .493 shot percentage and .775 shots on goal percentage.

Stolins was part of a defensive unit that allowed just eight goals in two games last week as she recorded her best effort against Ohio State in ALC action on Saturday.  She led the Gators on the day with six draw controls and a ground ball. Against Stetson, the Florida defense limited the Hatters to just two shots in the entire game.  For the week, the UF defense allowed just 15 shots and forced 17 caused turnovers.  Florida currently ranks second in scoring defense, allowing just 5.77 goals per game.

Florida is back in action on Saturday as it travels to State College, Pa. to face No. 11/9 Penn State (6-3). Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
