Monday March 25, 2013Florida Softball Hurler Hannah Rogers Tabbed SEC Pitcher of the Week
Florida junior pitcher Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) was named this week’s Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week after picking up three wins and a save in the circle for the Gator softball squad in the last week of play. Florida improved to 31-3 overall this season, 7-2 in Southeastern Conference play, with a 4-0 week, while Rogers elevated herself to 17-2 in the circle this season (1.13 ERA) to pick up the Gators’ fourth league accolade of the year.
Rogers registered a perfect 0.00 ERA the past four games for UF, while fanning 26 batters through 19.0 innings pitched as the Gators earned a mid-week run-rule shutout against USC Upstate March 20, while sweeping the weekend series over the Razorbacks with two shutouts and one mercy rule March 22 and 23.
In her four appearances, Rogers gave up just eight hits and walked only two batters. Rogers and sophomore pitcher Alyssa Bache (Clearwater, Fla.) combined for a one-hit shutout against Upstate, the 13th combined one-hitter in program history, as Rogers threw four innings of hitless, scoreless softball with seven Ks before Bache came on to finish the 11-0, five inning contest out.
Rogers then picked up the win in the first of two games against the Razorbacks Friday with a complete-game shutout, fanning nine Arkansas batters, two shy of her season-high 11, before Florida enforced the run-rule, 8-0, in six innings. The two-time All-American then came on for the save in the second game of the doubleheader, a 5-2 UF victory, adding four strikeouts through two innings to pick up her first save of the season while finishing the doubleheader with 13 strikeouts.
Rogers started Saturday’s series finale and tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts as senior right fielder Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.) helped her out with a walk-off shot in the bottom of the seventh for the 1-0 Gator win and series sweep.
Rogers’ 1.13 ERA places her third overall in the SEC, while her 0.84 ERA ranks second in conference play thus far. Rogers entered the week of play ranked seventh in the nation in wins. The latest NCAA statistics and first RPI standings of the season will be released later Monday.
Florida’s ace, Rogers has played a part in eight of UF’s 13 shutouts this year, five of those solo and three combined. The righty now has four career complete-game one-hitters and four combined one-hitters during her tenure as a Gator. Rogers has allowed no earned runs on nine different occasions, no walks seven times in 2013 and has already chalked up four wins over top-six opponents (then-No. 3 Cal, No. 5 Oregon, No. 1 Alabama and No. 6/7 Tennessee).
Rogers and the Gators will wrap up an eight-game home stand with Sunshine State opponent FSU Wednesday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium before finishing out the month of March at Ole Miss next weekend. First pitch between the Gators and Noles is slated for 6 p.m. from Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, and the game will air live on SunSports in north/central Florida and on FS Florida in south Florida with Larry Vettel and Megan Bush on the call.
