Thursday March 21, 2013Gators Advance Three Individuals and Two Relays to Tonight's Finals

Gainesville, Fla.

The Gator women will have three individuals and two relays in the finals tonight at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The finals are set to begin at 7 p.m. in the IUPUI Natatorium and Florida will compete in all five events tonight.

 

Starting off the day was Florida’s relay group of junior Ellese Zalewski (Melbourne, Australia), freshman Natalie Hinds (Midland, Texas), freshman Sinead Russell (Burlington, Ontario) and freshman Lindsey McKnight (Coral Springs, Fla.). They combined for a prelim time of 1:28.77 in the 200 free relay. They qualified seventh to advance to the A-Final tonight.

 

In the women’s 500 free, freshman Jessica Thielmann (Newcastle, England) finished in a time of 4:38.84 to advance to tonight’s B-Final. Also in the water for the Gators was junior Alicia Mathieu (Marlborough, Conn.) who swam a 4:42.41 to finish 21st overall and senior Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.) who finished 50th in 4:48.54.

 

Junior Elizabeth Biesel (North Kingstown, R.I.) moves on the A-Final tonight after she clocked in at 1:55.05 in the 200 IM to finish second in her heat and was fourth overall. Beisel finished second in the event at the 2013 SEC Championships. Last season she was disqualified on a false start and did not compete in the 200 IM final.

 

Three other Gators were in the 200 IM field, but did not advance to the finals tonight. Finishing 29th in a time of 1:58.77 was freshman Ashlee Linn (Southfield, Mich.). Sophomore Natasha Fung (Edmonton, Canada) was 40th in a time of 1:59.48, sophomore Rebecca Rainer (Richmond, Va.) was 51st after clocking in at 2:00.76 and McKnight was 56th in 2:01.25.

 

Advancing to the B-Final of the 50 free is Hinds who touched the wall in 22.27, just off her personal-best time of 22.26. She qualified 10th overall. Also in the 50 free was Zalewski who finished 35th in a time of 22.64.

 

Closing out the morning session was the 400 medley relay. The Gators’ Beisel, junior Hilda Luthersdottir (Harfnarfjordur, Iceland), Russell and Hinds combined for a time of 3:33.03 to finish eighth overall and advance to the A-Final tonight. Beisel’s lead-off split of 52.36 was a personal-best for her.

 

The 2013 NCAA Championships will continue tonight at 7 p.m. in the IUPUI Natatorium. The Gators will swim in all five events, 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 free relay. For live stats please follow this link.
