Wednesday March 20, 2013Embree Earns SEC Player of the Week Honor
After another big weekend that saw two SEC wins for Florida over No. 12 Georgia and No. 44 Tennessee as well as the Gators’ rise to No. 2 in the latest ITA team rankings, senior Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) added to her accolades today as she was named the SEC Player of the Week.
Over the previous weekend’s slate, Embree compiled a combined 3-0 record in singles and doubles with both singles wins coming against top-20 ranked opponents and both were clinching dual match victories.
Her straight-set singles win versus Tennessee’s No. 20 Brynn Boren was her 29th consecutive victory in dual-match singles play and she improved to 34-0 all-time in SEC dual match singles contests.
Embree’s wins also added up to her 107th career win on the singles and doubles courts, as her 214 combined victories moved her into sole possession of 10th place in Gator history.
Her wins over the Volunteers and Bulldogs helped the Gators extend their overall home win streak to 115, the nation’s longest active home winning streak of an NCAA Division I women’s team in any sport.
Florida (11-2, 4-1 SEC) returns to the home courts on Friday, March 22, when the team welcomes in eighth-ranked Alabama, before facing the 18th-ranked Auburn Tigers on Sunday. Friday’s match is slated for a 5 p.m. start, while the Auburn match will start at 1 p.m.
