Tuesday March 19, 2013No. 3 Gators Welcome USC Upstate for Non-Conference Clash Wednesday

Gainesville, Fla.

Following a stellar series win over No. 6/7 Tennessee, the No. 3 Gator softball squad (27-3, 4-2 SEC) will now set its sights on a non-conference mid-week tilt with USC Upstate (21-2, 5-1 A-Sun) Wednesday. The Orange and Blue will look to ride momentum from the past weekend into Wednesday’s match-up and will look to sophomore pitcher/utility player and reigning co-SEC Player of the Week Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) to help lead the way.

Wednesday’s one-game clash will mark the first-ever meeting between the two squads.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE GATORS

The Gators improved to 27-3 overall this season, 4-2 in SEC play, with a series win over No. 6/7 Tennessee March 15-17 at home. All three games between the Gators and Lady Vols were decided in eight innings, UF taking game one Friday (6-5), Tennessee evening things up Saturday with a 3-1 win, and Florida earning the series win Sunday, 5-3. For UF, the series win over UT marked the fifth straight three-game series win over the Lady Vols. The Vols and Gators have now played four consecutive eight-inning games dating back to the 2012 SEC Tournament. Sunday’s series-clincher proved to be the highlight of the weekend and the day was all about Haeger. Haeger knocked a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to force extras and sent the game-winning two-run bomb over the fence in the bottom of the eighth to walk Florida off with a career-tying five RBI. Haeger also picked up the win in the circle Sunday, improving to 8-1 on the season. Haeger’s heroics aside, freshman first baseman Taylor Schwarz (Palm Beach, Fla.) led UF at the plate with a .375 clip (3-for-8) through the three-game series. Florida now has 11 come-from-behind wins this season and the Gators are 3-2 in extra innings, 6-2 against top-25 opponents.

SCOUTING USC UPSTATE

USC Upstate embarks on Gainesville Wednesday boasting a 21-2 overall record, while the Spartans are also 5-1 in Atlantic Sun play so far in 2013. The Spartans most recently downed common opponent UNC Wilmington in a Saturday doubleheader. Upstate was led by sophomore Cheyenne Griffin over the weekend, who picked up a couple of game-winning hits, including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh in the second game, to lead the Spartans to a doubleheader sweep. Griffin first singled to drive in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the third in the first game, then hit her two-run blast to give the Spartans a 4-3 win in the second.

Sophomore shortstop Maddison Kieffer - a Florida native (Middleburg) - leads Upstate so far this season at the plate with a .441 average, including six doubles, a triple and four home runs. A total of three Spartans are batting over .400 on the season, as senior Ericka Harris (.437) and junior Meredith Barnes (.423) are second and third on the squad, respectively, behind Kieffer. Sophomore Shellie Robinson, also a Florida native (DeLand), owns a team-best six long balls and eight doubles for the Spartans, while freshman Jessica Ujvari is a perfect 12-for-12 on the base paths this season for Upstate.

In the circle, a trio of Spartans has split the bulk of the innings, led by junior Hannah Alexander (60.2 IP) and freshman Jamie Ujvari (59.2 IP). Junior Anna Miller has chipped in with 23.2 innings of work. Ujvari (1.17 ERA) has fanned a team-best 76 batters in her 59.2 IP, an average of 1.2 strikeouts per inning, while Alexander (1.62 ERA) has 65 Ks through 60.2 IP. Miller checks in with 23 strikeouts in 23.2 IP and a 1.77 ERA.

USC Upstate is riding a seven-game win streak into Gainesville; the only setbacks this season for the squad were against Kentucky (12-8, 11 inn.) and North Florida (1-0).
