Monday March 18, 2013Florida Softball's Lauren Haeger Named Co-SEC Player of the Week

Gainesville, Fla.

Softball sophomore Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) picked up UF’s third SEC accolade of the season Monday, earning co-SEC Player of the Week accolades for her contributions to No. 3 Florida’s hard-fought series win over No. 6/7 Tennessee last weekend.

The Gators (27-3, 4-2 SEC) used two eight-inning wins Friday (6-5) and Sunday (5-3) for their fifth consecutive three-game series win over Tennessee. All three contests between the Gators and Lady Vols were decided in extras, as Tennessee came away with a 3-1 victory in eight innings Saturday. Haeger shares Player of the Week honors this week with UT’s Lauren Gibson.

Sunday’s series clincher for the No. 3 Gators came down to Haeger’s bat, as the sophomore pitcher/designate player accounted for all five runs off two homers in the series finale, including a three-run game-tying blast in the sixth, and a two-run game-winning bomb in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up her 2-for-2 performance, including two walks and two runs scored. Her five RBI Sunday tied a career-high for a single game. The righty came on in the circle for the Orange and Blue in the seventh with the game tied 3-3 and worked 1.1 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to also pick up the win, her second over at top-25 opponent this year, and improve to 8-1 on the season as UF’s hurler.

Throughout the span of the three-game series, Haeger batted .300 (3-for-10) with three homers, six RBI, three runs and two walks. In the bottom of the fourth Saturday, Haeger, UF’s starting pitcher that day, helped herself out on offense with a solo shot, one of UF’s three hits of the afternoon and the Gators’ lone run, to tie game two of the series at 1-1 before Tennessee pulled out the 3-1 win.

Haeger now ranks first in the Southeastern Conference through league play in RBI (9), home runs (4), runs scored (7) and total bases (17), while ranking third overall in the conference in RBI (37) and homers (10).

Alongside Haeger, a pair of freshmen in Taylor Schwarz (Palm Beach, Fla.) and Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) led the Orange and Blue at the dish, Schwarz with a .375 batting clip and Stewart with a .364 average.

Florida now has 11 come-from-behind wins this season and the Gators are 3-2 in extra innings, 6-2 against top-25 opponents.

The Orange and Blue will host USC Upstate in a mid-week contest Wednesday at 6 p.m. before playing host to SEC Western Division opponent Arkansas in a three-game set in Gainesville March 22-24 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Game times between the Gators and Razorbacks are 6 p.m., 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
