Sunday February 18, 2001Softball Wins Consolation Game 8-0 vs. Belmont

Gainesville, FL

Amanda Judd was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the win.

The University of Florida softball team shut out its fourth opponent this season as it defeated Belmont 8-0 in six innings Sunday to win the consolation game in the University Centre Hotel Invitational at the Florida Softball Stadium.

Senior pitcher Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) struck out a season-high nine batters to lead UF's defense in its fourth errorless game. UF had 12 hits, one short of its season-high, for its most balanced outing this year.

The Gators (7-3) had beaten the struggling Bruins (0-7) 10-4 Feb. 16, and today's win got UF out of a three-game slide. Coach Karen Johns was thankful for the win and all-around effort. "I thought we did a good job. It was pretty clean, Renise had a nice game, and we executed. It doesn't matter who we're playing. That's something we always want to do."

Landry allowed just two hits and walked five in a complete game to improve to 3-1. Offensively, sophomore center fielder Amanda Judd (Cornville, Ariz./Mingus Union) was the leader. Judd went 3-for-3 (a personal best) with one run and an RBI. She drove in UF's third run in the third frame with her second double of the year.

Seven Gators recorded hits as UF scored in each inning but the fifth. Still, the team stranded 10 runners, a trend it has been battling all weekend.

"It's definitely something we need to improve," Johns said. "I thought we should have been out of this game in the fifth."

UF scored three times in the fourth and had runners on the corners with two outs. But, Judd was called out for leaving first base early. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, ended the game due to the NCAA Eight-run Mercy Rule. Junior Katy Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) singled for one run, and sophomore Nikki Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway), who was running for Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), scored on a wild pitch.

Baylor (12-4) defeated Chattanooga (4-4) 3-1 in nine innings for the UCHI title. The Gators have just one day off before Hofstra comes to town for the end of a 12-game home stand. The teams will play at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Florida Softball Stadium.
