Thursday March 14, 2013Gilroy Added to Tewaaraton Award Watch List
Sophomore midfielder Shannon Gilroy (Northport, N.Y.) has been added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, announced by the organization on Thursday.
Gilroy joins four Gators – seniors Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.), Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.), Sam Farrell (Millersville, Md.) and Brittany Dashiell – were all on the initial watch list last month that included 50 candidates from around the country. She is one of three women’s player added to the list, including Casey Bocklet of Virginia and Caroline Tarzian of Georgetown.
She currently leads the Orange and Blue in goals (27) and draw controls (28), second on the team in points (29) while also recording five ground balls, seven caused turnovers and two assists. Gilroy also holds a .587 shot percentage and .696 shots on goal percentage and is 6-for-9 on free position attempts. The sophomore midfielder is the current ALC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Gators to wins over No. 9 Loyola and No. 13 Dartmouth last week.
In her rookie season, Gilroy was a 2012 WomensLax.com and SyanpseSports.com All-American, ALC All-Tournament team member and three-time National Rookie of the Week. She holds the records for most draw controls in a game with eight against UAlbany on Feb. 24 and second in career draw controls with 111 in just a season and half with the Gators.
A second round of additions, if necessary, will be announced on April 11 and a list of 25 candidates with be announced on April 26. Five finalists for the award will be decided on May 9 and invited to an awards ceremony on May 30 at the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
With Gilroy’s addition, UF now has five players selected to the watch list, more than other team in the country. Florida is back in action on Saturday as it heads to Oregon for a 4 p.m. ET game at Papé Field in Eugene, Ore.
