Thursday March 14, 2013Florida Men's Golf to Participate in Chris Schenkel Invitational
The eighth-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team will continue its spring season Friday, March 14, as the team plays in the Chris Schenkel Invitational. Georgia Southern University will host the three-round tournament at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
Since its inception in 1971, the Chris Schenkel Invitational has been one of the most prestigious events in collegiate golf. Florida has a rich history at the event, playing in every tournament since 1989.
“The Chris Schenkel Invitational is one of my favorite tournaments of the year,” head coach Buddy Alexander commented. “It has great tradition and set the blueprint for how current college tournaments are run now. It has a lot of history and always is a great event.”
Alexander’s lineup will consist of freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.), senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada), senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.), and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.). Sophomore Thomas Stewart (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) will participate in the event as an individual.
“As a team, we are getting healthier,” Alexander stated. “Hopefully, we can bounce back after a few so-so tournaments. I believe that our best golf is in front of us.”
Last season, UF finished in a tie for third place at the par-72, 6,962 yard course. Vogel was the Gators’ lowest scorer in 2012, placing ninth. McCumber tied for 10th and Tomlinson finished in a tie for 13th place, as well.
In his playing days at Georgia Southern, Coach Alexander tied for sixth in the 1974 Chris Schenkel Invitational and placed third in the 1975 edition.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. each day. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
