Monday March 11, 2013Gator Volleyball Announces 2013 Spring Schedule

Gainesville, Fla.

The 2012 Southeastern Conference Champion University of Florida volleyball team, coming off its 21st regional semifinal appearance in 22 seasons and a No. 10 ranking in the final AVCA poll, announced on Monday its schedule for the 2013 spring season.

Spring practice officially begins Monday, March 11, as the Gators return 11 members of the 2012 roster, including five starters. The future looks bright for Florida Volleyball, as UF welcomes three signees to next year’s freshman class, including early enrollee Denise Belcher (Apopka, Fla.) who will suit up for the Orange and Blue during the 2013 spring season. Florida also welcomes a healthy Noami Santos-Lamb (Carolina, Puerto Rico) back to the floor in 2013.

Florida starts the spring by facing UCF, who finished the 2012 season with an 18-15 record, including an 11-5 mark in Conference USA action. The Golden Knights will begin the 2013 season anew, as they join the Big EAST. The Gators face the Golden Knights Saturday, March 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Orlando.

Gator fans will have the opportunity to witness the Florida-Florida State rivalry twice this spring, as the Orange and Blue host the Seminoles on Saturday, March 23 in the Lemerand Center at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Seminoles ended last season by dropping a 2-3 heartbreaker to Purdue in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The ‘Noles, who claimed the Atlantic Coast Conference title and finished the season ranked No. 18 in the final AVCA poll, return 11 letterwinners from 2012.

Florida then hosts Team WAVE, the women’s professional volleyball team of the Florida Region of USA Volleyball. There are four former Gator greats on the training roster, including Kristy Jaeckel, Benavia Jenkins, Kisya Killingsworth and Kelly Murphy. The Gators and the Florida WAVE are set for action at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6.

In the final weekend of spring competition, Florida travels to Coral Gables to face the Miami Hurricanes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13. Miami saw their season end in the O’Connell Center a year ago, falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to the College of Charleston. The Hurricanes finished 2012 as the ACC runner-up with a 25-6 overall record, receiving votes in the final AVCA poll of 2012
