The University of Florida track & field teams garnered 24 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-America honors, announced Monday by the New Orleans-based organization.
As a team, Florida was the only program to produce multiple two-time first-team honorees with three – Marquis Dendy (Middletown, Del.), Najee Glass (Woodbridge, N.J.) and Dedric Dukes (Miami, Fla.). Arkansas’ men gathered the highest number of first-team plaudits with 17, narrowly edging out runner-up Florida’s 13. Texas A&M finished with eight; while Indiana, Minnesota and Oklahoma State earned seven each.
The Gators had two individual NCAA Champions in Dendy and junior hurdler Eddie Lovett (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Dendy captured his first individual NCAA crown, leaping to a new personal best and school record of 8.28m/27-2 to take home the title. The two-time SEC Champion indoors in the event, Dendy is now the sixth-best performer in the history of the NCAA and leads the NCAA and the U.S. in the event this year. His mark is second in the world in 2013.
Lovett set a new NCAA Championship meet record in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a new personal best and school record of 7.50. Lovett is now fourth all-time in collegiate history and brings home Florida’s first 60-meter hurdle title in program history. It’s the second hurdle crown in Florida school history and Lovett’s time breaks Olympic gold medalist Aries Merritt’s previous NCAA meet record of 7.51.
In terms of overall conference performance, the SEC led the way with 54 women’s first-team honorees, ahead of the Big 12 (35) and the Pac-12 (30). Paced by top-three teams, the SEC accumulated 59 men’s first-team honors as a conference, followed by the Big Ten (40) and the Big 12 (20).
First-team honors were given to those who placed in the championships’ top eight in an event or were a member of an eight-person final. Second team honors were earned by those who finished between ninth and 16th place. In addition, 11 men and nine women earned honorable mention honors. USTFCCCA membership by a program is required to earn All-America awards.
A full highlight package of the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships will air on Sunday, March 17 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The 2013 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships can also be seen on ESPNU, airing at 9:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 13.
The Gators open the 2013 outdoor season Saturday, March 16 at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge.
