Monday March 11, 2013Softball Sophomore Briana Little Tabbed SEC Player of the Week

Birmingham, Ala.

Florida softball sophomore Briana Little (Middleburg, Fla.) is this week’s SEC Player of the Week following her contributions to UF’s 3-1 record the past week of play. Little helped the Gators (25-2, 2-1 SEC) to an 8-4 victory over No. 1/2 Alabama last Wednesday, while also contributing to UF’s first SEC series win over Auburn to kick off 2013 conference play last weekend on the road.

The second-year outfielder batted .667 (6-for-9) with a double, three-run bomb, four RBI, two walks and three hit-by-pitches, while also registering a .786 on-base mark, a 1.111 slugging percentage and one stolen base through the four-game span. Little had two hits against Alabama and two each in the first two games of the series at Auburn to contribute to a career-best five-game hit streak.

In Sunday’s series finale against AU, Little registered a perfect 1.000 on-base mark with a walk and two hit-by-pitches. Little now has 11 on the season, three of those against Auburn, and is chasing former Gator All-American Francesca Enea’s single-season record of 15, set in 2010.

Little’s ability to get on base has helped produce runs for UF, and her five runs scored so far in SEC play rank first in the conference, while her three hit-by-pitches, 11 overall, also check in first in the league. On the season, Florida batters have been tagged with 37 HBPs, the school record being 59 in 2006.

Little has rallied for three game-winning RBI performances for the Gators so far this season and ranks second on the squad with five homers – two of those being grand slams. The left-fielder paces Florida with her .523 on-base percentage and ranks third on the team with a .362 batting clip.

Florida is now 4-1 this season against top-25 competition following UF’s victory over No. 1/2 Alabama March 6. The Gators pace the conference in RBI, with 178, compared to opponents’ 40 thus far in 2013.
