Friday March 8, 2013Men's Golf in Sixth after Day One of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters

Las Vegas, Nev.

Despite troublesome weather conditions, the eighth-ranked University of Florida men’s golf team is tied for sixth place after the first day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Friday, March 8 at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The team recorded a 292 (+4) for the first round at the par-72, 7,510 yard course.

The weather was not cooperating for the majority of the day. Play was delayed early in the day due to rain. When play did resume the temperature had dipped below 50 degrees and there were gusts of wind nearing 20 mph. The conditions made life hard for the field as only 11 of 81 golfers were able to record scores under-par.

“It was a long day, I think we were the last team on the course,” head coach Buddy Alexander stated. “There was a rain delay for nearly an hour and a half and when we did come back on the course it was chilly and windy.”

Sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was the team’s lowest scorer, recording four birdies against three bogeys en route to a 71 (-1) on the day. It marked his second round below par this season. Banks is tied for seventh place after one round.

“Eric had a good solid round,” Alexander added. “He got off to a bad start, but came around and finished well.”

Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.), in his first start of the spring season, and senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) both shot a one-over par for the day. Crouch was three-over par following his first 11 holes. He responded with birdies on the fourth and sixth hole to finish in 73 strokes. McCumber was two-over after his first nine and registered two birdies against one bogey to match Crouch’s score. The two are tied for 19th place.

“I was really pleased with our fourth and fifth guys (Banks and Crouch),” Alexander said. “A.J. hadn’t played a lot since October. He had a good solid round today.”

Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) scored a 75 (+3) for the first 18 holes of the event. Vogel had his second eagle of the season on the par-5 13th hole.

Sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) rounded out the Gators lineup, tallying a 77 (+5) on the day.

“We needed that from our fourth and fifth guys,” Alexander stated. “I know our top-three guys can do that and hopefully they will tomorrow.”

Tomlinson will be the first Gator to tee off tomorrow morning. The Gainesville, Fla. native will start on the first hole at 11:45 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
